Help kitting out a 97 Kona Kilauea for touring

Lots of good advice in the comments. My 2p from doing similar kinds of distances would be... Rear rack that puts the bags way back a good idea. I also like a front rack to balance things out. Not too bothered about the extra weight. Carradice are good panniers. And I like volume - half empty...

Splatter Paint - Bike frame and Forks

I've never done it but was impressed with the splatting in this thread: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/93-kona-explosif-1-of-1.472147/page-4

Good luck. If you can post a close up photo of the hub and cassette/freewheel then it should be possible to say which one it is with a bit more certainty. I think they changed year on year. Think I've seen a 91 catalogue that suggests a Hyperglide 7 speed cassette but earlier ones will be different.

Yep. Worth reading this: "Traditional Thread-on Freewheels" https://www.sheldonbrown.com/freewheels.html They can be hard to shift if seized on a bit. A long bar helps with leverage.

Mystery 90s bike with CS serial currently £37...possibly worth seeing just for the description... (near Plymouth)

The whole thing is a joy - " I went on a big bike ride once from Milan to Barcelona, 800 odd miles. Fun but a bit much really. Hot knees." "There’s one guy work there who’s crazy - always kicking off about wrong junk in the wrong skip. He has to wear a body camera - all red in the face all...

Replacing cup & cone BB with sealed. But which?

Shimano UN55 are still available new e.g. at St John St Cycles in 115 and 127mm lengths (though I don't think they are still manufactured) and strike the price/durability/quality/weight balance well. Though I expect the Tange units and others are good too, I've just not tried them.

I Need Help Identifying This Retro Bike.

I've just checked the 89 catalogue and it looks like the rear triangle is CrMo like the Rockhopper and the main triangle is plain gauge CrMo like the Hardrock. So my memory on that score was wrong, it's different to both (or a blend of the two). Definitely an upgrade on the standard Hardrock.

I Need Help Identifying This Retro Bike.

It's a Specialized Hardrock Comp. There are catalogues in the Archive, though not one for 1987. From memory, the Comp versions had frames from the next level up, e.g. Hardrock Comp had a Rockhopper level frame. All early Specialized are nice bikes IMO...

Spesh' chain stay u brake year ?

The 1988 catalogue in the archive shows rear U brakes throughout that year. My Hardrock is 1988 with spec as per catalogue including rear U brake.

Dave Russell - Back to Blue

I think you've summed it up well. Caged for convenience, loose for more balls to share the load. Not sure how much difference it makes in the real world. Hatta Swan headsets are nice.

    Retrobike Touring.

Spa Cycles also sells Exal SP19 rims which are about the same profile and weight as Sputniks but I found them nicer to build with, maybe the angle of the spoke hole drilling. Also they look nice and are £15 each.

1989 Giant Escaper (another tip rescue!)

I think Mongoose frames were built by Merida. Some at least. This is a handy page for serial numbers "Asian Serial Number Guide - Bike Forums" https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/1042901-asian-serial-number-guide.html And this one (for BMX) references Merida too "Vintage mongoose: Serial...

1989 Giant Escaper (another tip rescue!)

The higher end Giant bikes of this era are massively under-rated (in my opinion). Triple butted cro-mo, well built, good components... Excellent find and save. The head badge and paint schemes are cool too.
