    Raleigh advice please

Thanks jamie, exactly right - Some mysteries are better solved!! FiveAlpha, thanks...it's a long time but I'm sure someone out there can beat it :-)

    Raleigh advice please

So just an update - because I hate it when you read threads & never know the outcome! (Of course I'm making a large assumption anyone gives a ...!) Took it into the shop for the grinding I could feel when pedaling under load which was diagnosed as the teeth on the original rear sprocket being...

I’ve given a home to a knackered old Dog on its last legs-

Re: Must have taken that picture really quickly before it fell over

    Raleigh advice please

Re: Hi Keith, Thanks for your input as always :) He definitely said he'd left the hub 'as is', just cleaned it up and lubed/greased the axle. I might see if I can get an original 'fitted' gear cable as originally used by Raleigh - made a neater job and an easier adjustment.

    Raleigh advice please

Re: Yep 1935. :D and in our family from new. I think I may have found something to help adjust the gears correctly on the Sturmey Archer site - indicator should be level with end of axle when in normal(N). at the moment it's very slightly inside the axle so I'll ry and tweak it.

    Raleigh advice please

I had my family heirloom serviced recently as it is over 80 years old and it was needing some tlc. Since I've had it back it doesn't feel quite right but I'm after some advice over what exactly is amiss before I go back if possible? The bearings were replaced in the crank, and the gear cable...

    Sturmey Archer KS adjustment?

Sorry, I'm sure there's threads about this but can't find them for looking! My KS close ratio hub isn't quite spot on and although I can find plenty of info on optimum adjustment of other 3 speed hubs, these all have the benefit of a little window in the nut where you can see what's happening -...

What is one of these called??

Ha, ha, that's quite funny actually and makes me feel a little better - what's an inner tube? (only joking!!) Found a guy not too far away now who restores classic all steel lightweight racing bikes mainly - so this won't be quite as exciting as his usual patients, but it seems a fitting option.

What is one of these called??

Re: Thanks for those - definite options, although I would shy away from the modern one just because it seems rude to shove that on when there's more period appropriate ones available (never say never though). I have located the 'wheel' with the metal detector but unfortunately the retaining...

What is one of these called??

Re: A little disappointed it hasn't got a special name! Still no luck despite vicious pruning & hands & CSI searching technique. However, I have found someone with a metal detector I can hopefully borrow (good call) The whole thing has gone unfortunately PeeTee, but thanks for your kind offer.

What is one of these called??

So very annoyingly, 2 months into my possession and having survived for 84 years, a piece of my family history flew off into the undergrowth as I changed down the gears pulling up outside my house this evening. :x It was just after 5 so getting dark and couldn't see it despite looking with the...

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

Ah I see, that makes sense - thanks Hamster.

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

No offence taken Peachy :) I do like the gear change I have to admit - a little stiff to move back into low from high, but my memory of the later, more common handlebar mounted 3 speed lever was that it also needed extra effort so I think that's normal. Thanks for the pointer for servicing but...

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

Re: Thanks Peachy...nearly the weekend so I'm looking forward to having a go at the saddle suggestion. I know it doesn't look like it, but I have given it a good clean  but it's had a well used life after all! I also note you've got a little more choice - currently it's this or my...

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

Getting a bit technical here for a dummy, but many thanks - I get the jist and will seek out a friendly shop as suggested!

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

Thank you all for the replies. Joe Rides - very helpful thank you, and yes the extenders do work rather badly so I can understand the term. Hamster - I hadn't realised that was an option, but it would definitely help the rather cramped position so I'll look at that. I was a bit worried the...

    Handlebar/head gear replacement for dummies!?

Happy New Year all. This is regarding a 1935 Raleigh Speed Sports as discussed in a previous post about brakes, which knowledgeable people kindly helped with. I did briefly mention handlebar replacement in one of those posts. When riding, it feels like all my weight is taken on my hands at the...

Improving Brakes - Steel rims 1935 Raleigh

Re: Thanks Craigmount, that does make perfect sense about the wear on the rims. I guess it's getting the balance you can live with, and not making them so rough that you'd be replacing the blocks every week! I do like the look of the Lauterwasser bars - there are some nice reproductions...

    Raleigh Speed Sport? 1935.

Just thought I'd attach a few pics of my current transport - subject of a thread on the brakes over on the retro road forum, and a bit more history there. The handlebars/brake levers are non-original, and I assume the saddle is a replacement as well - seems more comfort that sport based...as I...
