    1950 Rotrax Super Course

Yes lacquered over now. The angle makes it look lower however it is quite a bit lower than the original would have been. I wanted it to sit between the cable guide and shifter bands. Should be well clear of the chainset though

Real selling/purchase price for vintage steel bikes in 2018?

Re: Some good points but have to disagree completely with the view on the young, way off the mark!

Any recommendations for a vintage frame respray?

Re: Home sprays always a good option if you’re not wanting to shel out much for the finish. Doing mine at the moment as a temp finish. I’m at around £40 2 colour including decals. Finish is pretty good. No need to spend big money on a decent home job to get as good a result as you will

Real selling/purchase price for vintage steel bikes in 2018?

Re: Re: Likely a good reason for expensive complete builds, people want their money back with a bit, unfortunately rarely works like that!

Real selling/purchase price for vintage steel bikes in 2018?

Re: I can see the attraction of finished projects but I think this differentiates the collector from the enthusiast. There’s certainly a place for bikes already finished to a fine standard, however I’m with you, for me personally it’s about the build.

Real selling/purchase price for vintage steel bikes in 2018?

Re: I think it’s common with everything really, buyers want to feel like they’ve picked up a bargain for next to nothing and sellers don’t want to feel like they’ve given something away without hitting a really good price. I don’t buy full bikes so I’ve only noticed frame prices but there do...

    1950 Rotrax Super Course

Re: So, slow start to this one. After stripping the frame for painting the stays turned out to be quite pitted, nothing to deep but enough to warrant a proper repair job. Unfortunately the friend that'll be filling them is taking a year out so a proper restore is going to have to go on hold for...

Is it worth the effort? To me of course it is!

Re: A well loved and restored bike is always worth the effort regardless of marque. Good looking bike!

    Carlton Identification

Re: Paint scheme lugs and fork crown match that of the 1973 ish Raleigh gran sport. Considering they were building Carlton’s at this point it’s probably a good indication of age at least

Re: Re: Might sound like an obvious question but seeing as a dust seal change doesn’t involve any kind of strip to the air side you’d be unlucky if it wasn’t just a re air error

Re: Try ramping the pressure up on the air side to see if it firms up and keep an eye on your gauge reading over a few days that’ll give you an idea as to wether it’s an air issue. Otherwise try compressing the forks, might sound obvious but it can take 50 or so compressions on some fox forks...

Anyone opt for mech discs over hydraulic?

Re: Re: Have to agree. I’ve ran hydro for last 8 years, never had a leak and require not much more than a 15 minute service yearly. I’ve not ridden mech that can compare yet

Re: Fitted new seals for my 2010 float rl a few weeks ago, filled the air side with 30ml from the bottom and the damping side with 160ml from the top. It can be filled from the bottom as well it’s just easier from the top.

    PayPal payment help required

Re: As said make sure you photograph everything including packaging just in case. The buyers right to want to not go through friends and family options however PayPal unfortunately does favour the buyer and not the seller. I was rinsed when selling a complete bike a few years ago and...

    Wear a helmet or not?

Re: I agree the kind of impact from a car hit might not do a great deal depending on your injuries. Unfortunately for me though someone close to me suffered life changing injuries as a result of not wearing one so I’ll never agree to an argument not to wear them. They’re not going to protect...

    Wear a helmet or not?

Re: Coming from a mtb background I always wear a helmet and so has carried over to any road cycling I do. Not really sure why anyone wouldn’t. You don’t always have to hit your head that hard to cause fairly serious injury. The idea that it’s really only their to protect from car collisions...
