What is this? MTB or Tourer!?

Oh dear...... Is that the definitive answer? Banishment to CUF! No room for a "Show us your OG Hybrid" thread at retrobike? Cmon look at the get up of the two mongs in the Dawes advert. Retro AF and no denying. 😉 Cheers Dave

What is this? MTB or Tourer!?

Lol hello Oaklec.... Thanks. But "a definitive answer......." 😆 Seems there is a modicum of interest building up on these OG Hybrids? Dave

What is this? MTB or Tourer!?

Hiya, please excuse the thread hijack... Anyone remember Dawes Early 90s "Street" series, very much along the same lines as these Raleigh Pioneers etc? Pretty much as described above "hybrid" the awkward lovechild of MTBs and Road bikes, more than a bit shit at both ends of the spectrum, but...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Uh oh! The decals were pretty gouged and faded so I did the unforgivable and removed them. I only have that one photo from 2014 and bugger me hasn't my fence faded?!

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Your logic matches mine but I was deterred by the road wheels and limited tyre clearances. Do you think it would make a better platform for a drop bar gravel bike? WTD? Need a thread.... Cheers Dave

Interesting Peachy It's funny how digital camera sensors handle this particular hue. I never get the same colour twice. Here we have: CB "Aqua", Turquoise broom handle, dayglo green tape measure and a Park Tool blue tyre lever: If the colour was the same as in my photo above against the...

Madness. I have downloaded that catalogue and to be Frank their image is green. I swear my bike is darker than your teal Cape Wrath but it is nowhere near as green as the catalogue bike: Cheers Dave

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Um...... Slight change of plans? I've decided to do a proper restoration on the Pagan, it means something to me due to having owned it from new. Any other bike means nothing so I'm going to tinker about with this local Gumtree find: Woohoo! Err....... 1994 Dawes Street Life 12 Speed...

Thanks. I appreciate everyones answers. Off to research, levers and shifters. Cheers Dave

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Hiya, I want lower gears. The 8 speed cassette on the Giant wheels has a 34T large sprocket and the Chainset has a 24T small ring. Pretty low gearing to be fair but if I can go lower I gladly will. Would like some decent separate shifters and brake levers. So shifters need to be speed specific...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Oh ok I didnt realise V brakes were better, engineering wise they look shite, cludged together to make wheel removal a touch easier. Looks like Cantis have more mechanical leverage but maybe not then. They are a much cleaner solution for sure. So what do I need to do look for an x Speed...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

That's a thought but its already with the finishers. Although I can nick components of that Giant. The Shifter/Lever is a combined unit, Shimano ST-EF51-AL fairly nasty and the clear plastic covers are horribly yellowed: My frame and forks have canti bosses, which provides the better ultimate...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Righto chaps. Time for some wheel/spacing/gearing/cassette questions. I have the Rigida Rally 30s which have been on this bike for about 20 years. The rear is 130mm spacing and wears a 6 speed Shimano freehub. The bike has been left out in all weathers so the wheels look like this...

Yep chromed steel, from a 2010 Pashley Courier. 24.5 inches wide with 1.5 inch rise and sweep, just flipped over. That courier stem is too short and the original Claud specced Kalloy AL222 is too long. Cheers Dave

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Well a set of drops is going to be bit more of a ball ache than regular mtb or touring bars is what I meant. A flipped set of Pashley bars for example: Shifters, stems, brake levers etc. Less straightforward with more parts to be bought and ultimately fiddling around to get a shifter...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Thanks chaps. No noises or graunching from the BB , feels slow to turn by hand but I guess that's the missing leverage from the cranks? I bought this bike in April 1990. It was sold as new but was clearly the previous year model. Looking at drop bars it's all a bit of a ball ache, maybe a...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Great stuff guys thanks! Well I've had the BB removed: LBS did it for free! Top lads! Here's what they handed me in a bag: Looks ruff? Cleaned up lovely! The cable guide rivet chewed up the label on the BB body, if you look closely at the pic above you can see the circular impression...

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Hiya, Thanks for that Oaklec. Will see what the LBS are able to extract from my frame. I definately had the BB replaced by a different LBS back in 2014 and the bike has probably only done 1000 miles since then. Will report back this evening, with pics. Cheers Dave

1989 Claud Butler Pagan. Gravelly Rebuild?

Quick update. I looked at bike specific toolkits yesterday, not happy with what I'm seeing in terms of vfm. Does anyone have any suggestions on a basic set of bike specific tools? I have decent, regular mechanics tools, just not the random bicycle stuff. Anyway, my LBS will remove the BB for a...
