Sun Snipe Prestige ( needs a lot of lovin)

Re: The bike is now fully stripped, and the seatpost only put up a small fight before coming loose, some kind soul had greased it. So too the bottom bracket which was packed with the the stuff. I have discovered that the simplex rear mech along with the change lever is entirely made of...

Re: The stem on your bike is identical to the one on my Carlton which is original from 1971. I saw this bike for sale, looking forward to see how you get on with it.

Re: Couldn't resist making some tweaks to the bike, I replaced the bar tape with black stuff for practical reasons but didn't like the look, the original was White so i chose to replace it with white while i was replacing the brake levers. The original GB levers were a bit battered and they...

    Raleigh Scorpio (mid-'70s?)

Re: Unless I have misunderstood, the dent in the pic is the drive side, if so its meant to be there it gives clearance for the chain rings. I quite like the copper colour, very 70s. good luck with it.

Re: Thanks guys, i think the fact that i brought it back into use is why im getting more fun out of riding it than i do my modern. And i enjoyed the doing the work to it so much im on the look out for others. There must be thousands of old bike languishing in sheds up and down the country. The...

Re: Just got back from the Isle of wight, I took the Carlton with me and enjoyed every minute of riding it whilst there. It really does ride better than i had hoped. Im smitten with it. John the wax you sent me has worked wonders on the saddle, it has a proper lustre to it now. Thanks again.

Re: Thanks for the kind words. The only issue on the Sky ride was the wet weather braking, It was very poor, a combination of steel rims, water and new pads i guess. If it hadn't been for the event i would not have ridden in the rain anyway but its always possible to get caught out by the...

Re: I agree spokesmann, you can see why the original owner fell for the bike in the first place it is an eye catching colour scheme. I guess i was the same, i hadnt set out to buy a Carlton it could have been any marque to be fair, but the paint work caught my eye along with the tiny price tag...

Re: Well i pulled out all the stops in order to get the bike ready for the Sheffield sky ride Sunday 10th Aug, and i made it. There are one or two areas i need to go back too, for instance i did nothing with the spokes other than a quick clean and a check over, the pedals are still not done...

Re: Time for an update. I had the chance to crack on with the bike and have made some good progress. Most of the rust is gone and its scrubbed up quite well on the whole. Started the rebuild. The main problem is cleaning up the pedals, i can have a go at the outer side but getting...

Re: Wow that looks fantastic. Thanks for the offer, what about postage costs. Been beavering away cleaning and polishing and most things are coming up well, pics to follow. However the main problem is the pedals, i cant get to the inside edges, is there a product that i can dip them into that...

The good thing about restoring bike rather than cars which is my usual habit is you can work on the bits in the kitchen. Tried to breathe some life into the saddle. I started by teasing off the blue paint that had been splashed on it, then used some leather restorer.

    Freewheel Question

Hi all Im currently restoring a Carlton 5 speed bike. After all the elbow grease i would like to use it, however Sheffield is all hills and im often in the basement on my modern bike which has a low of 36X26. The carlton is 48X25, what are my options for lowering the gearing. Its a long time...

Re: Thanks for that, I knew the loop would not fit over the pin but didnt think of tucking it behind. I like cheap fixes. :D Yes the paint scheme is eye catching even if the spec list isn't.

Re: Thanks for the replies, I have just stripped the bike, well apart from the drive side crank, the cotter is well stuck. Apart from that it came apart no problem, the stem and seat post were nicely greased. The rims have very little rust and should clean up easily. On closer inspection the...
