Kona Jake the Snake Cantilever Brake Question

Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. The bike is back with my son now and he says the braking is much better. I needed some new blocks as well and found that Koolstop have a 'Cross Pad' holder and blocks pack, which I fitted instead of the longer MTB type.

Kona Jake the Snake Cantilever Brake Question

Years ago I bought a used Kona Jake the Snake which I passed on to my son. We changed the original cantis (white Kore Kross?) to Tektro Mini-V brakes, but the setup wasn't very successful as it needed constant adjustment. Anyway to cut to the chase, I'm now reinstalling the original brakes...

Lock on Bar Grips - which way round

Yes, those are the ones. Thanks for the advice. I will fit them the way round you suggest. I makes sense from a comfort point of view.

Lock on Bar Grips - which way round

I feel quite foolish asking this question, but when you want to do something right it's best to ask ... so I'm refurbing one of my kids' old bikes and the bar grips needed replacing. It has a single SRAM 3.0 gripshift up front, so I bought some Oxford gripshift specific lock-on grips. All...

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

Well, the 'red & silver' theme is all down to Heff's. They were given free rein as to the colours, so I'm guessing it was a look they liked! I've just done a mechanical overhaul - no pimping as such :). However finding a silver headset was quite tricky, they all seem to be black these days...

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

They are really nice rides. Quite stretched out, but smooth and rattle free. Mine is relatively minimalist, and has done a shedload of miles. I only really enjoy cycling for a purpose, I'm not a recreational cyclist. I used to commute all year, a 40 mile round trip every day come rain or...

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

I've finally completed servicing the doppelganger, I fitted a Cane Creek 40 headset. Pics attached.

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

Sounds like a different frame. Mine does have a small Kinesis sticker on the front face, top of the seat tube "Kinesis Heat Treated 7005", but no other markings except for the previously mentioned model number and serial number under the bottom bracket shell. I reckon you have a superior frame...

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

As a matter of interest, what is the model number of your Heff's frame (stamped under the bottom bracket shell, runs across the shell, serial number goes round it)?

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

Thank you for the replies. I have completely disassembled and rebuilt both of these bikes (bar refitting the headset), neither of them have or had any decals though. They were both custom builds, but Heffs had a free hand bar a few requests. The doppelganger is Deore 510 throughout, whereas...

    Heff's Bike Shop - Kinesis A480-X

Imagine my suprise when I was out walking the dog and a bloke cycles past on an MTB that looks remarkably like mine. I bought mine mail order from Heff's sometime in the mid to late nineties. It turns out he bought his from Heff's at around the same time. To cut a long story short I'm now...

Fitting larger profile tyres to road bike - seatpost clearance

Yes, I was wondering if the chainstays could be fractionally shorter, and I am a fairweather cyclist these days!

Fitting larger profile tyres to road bike - seatpost clearance

Thanks Foz, just as a thought and I know this is not going to be aesthetically pleasing, is there anything inherently wrong in fitting a 28mm tyre at the front and a 25mm at the rear? So at least if I have to ditch the rear 28mm if it causes paint damage then I retain some softness at the front...

Fitting larger profile tyres to road bike - seatpost clearance

Thanks Jim. I had considered putting some clear frame protector tape on the back of the seat tube to see if it marked up after a ride or two. Probably best to try that and if there is too much rubbing then switch to 25mm tyres instead.

Fitting larger profile tyres to road bike - seatpost clearance

As seems to be the trend at the moment I decided to try some larger profile tyres on my road bike. The bike is a Peugeot Competition Circa 1997/8 (I never managed to fully identify the exact model), which I stripped down, had the chainstays (which were rusted through) replaced, and then...

    Headset stack height

I'm currently rebuilding a 1999 Peugeot (CP70). The headset was shot and I need to get a replacement. I'm uncertain of the exact make and model of the original. The makers details had worn off with the exception of the odd letter and part of a symbol. With a bit of research I worked out that...
