    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I finally got wheels built for this so I can get it ready for spring. Suntour XC Pro hubs on Sun rims. I got a pair of 43 mm wide Panaracer gravel kings and they fit with about 6 mm around the fork. I've been having trouble finding a 26.6 mm seatpost. My dream find would be a Suntour...

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I decided to use these Suntour XC pedals instead of the originals because I want at least one bike without toe clips. This will be my first bike without toe clips since I was 15 years old. Might be hard to get used to, I think I'll feel like I'm about to fall off while I'm riding.

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

Here's my parts cleanup station for this bike, mostly they are in good shape and need cleaning and buffing. I used scotchbrite on the cranks and started rebuilding the pedals. I've read you all talk about rubbing rusty chrome with aluminum foil so I tried it out on one of the pedal spindles...

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I finished painting, decaling, and clearcoating. The headset and bb are the original Tange and SR parts. Brakes are the original Shimano cantilevers. I have Suntour XCpro hubs and some new Sun rims but no spokes yet. I'm hoping my local bike co-op has a calculator and stock of spokes. I also...

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

:D yes, I chickened out. If I had found the right orange-pink colour I would have but figure this pistachio is in the spirit of pink or celeste. I have some dark blue generic Bianchi decals that will suit the pale green frame. Adventure bikes is a great name for a bicycle category.

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I finally got some momentum on this project. I stripped and sanded the frameset. I was a bit surprised by the lumpy brass here and there. I'll file and sand the worst areas before painting. Washed it with lacquer thinner, primed and painted it Krylon pistachio. I didn't mean to match my...

    1993 (?) Jamis Dakota

Fillet brazing and fastback stays on a mid-range1993 production frame, that's pretty cool.

    1990 Bianchi Sika

Really nice, Bianchis from this era are special.

    Now that’s kinda interesting!

Can't provide much info but my wife bought one of these in 1992 in Toronto. It came with 500LX components. Haven't seen another until your post today. Wish we still had it.

Fun project, and those high-profile brakes are wonderful.

Claud Butler Cape Wrath History Timeline 1987-1997

Thanks for the thorough archive, really interesting to see a lugged steel production mountain bike as late as 1996.

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

Thanks. That's true, they had high end lugged mountain bikes into the 90s, the Project series of hybrids, and the one I wanted most in the mid 90s - a cyclocross frame/fork.

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I tried some weak paint remover but it ate into the original paint, so I'll sandblast it and repaint. I also started cleaning up the parts. I rebuilt the pedals and cleaned up the dust caps.

    Bianchi Volpe winter project

I bought this frame and a bag of parts from my local bike co-op last week. The lot contains the original everything except the seatpost, saddle, and wheels. I've been looking for a Bianchi Project 5 or 7 for a long time and I think I'll like this one even more. I thought it was a touring frame...

    Sachs/Huret thumbshifter remount

No, I didn't know they made thumbshifters after these, thought they went straight to twist shifters. What do they look like? Yesterday I picked up a couple derailleurs from a used bike shop, somewhat related.

    Sachs/Huret thumbshifter remount

Not sure, old Suntour shifters all seem to have bent levers. What a great way to indicate high and low gear. Sounds perfect for a guest bike.

    Sachs/Huret thumbshifter remount

Those are nice, thanks. I have a pair of the ones they make for Rivendell. These ones I'm trying to save for nostalgic reasons.

    Sachs/Huret thumbshifter remount

Cool, the ratchetting feels great, eh? A cycle jumble sale, I'd love to go to one of those. The post/boss is flanged/rivetted? inside the black base so I have to dremel that away to pull the bases apart. Did one and it came out easily. Thanks for the link, it's inspiring to see that someone...
