Question - Which is the most famous/ respected cycle brand that no longer exists?

Peugeot. Obviously the cars still exist, but I don't think they make bikes any more do they? More on the road than off, but a long list of wins in the TdF and other big races with works riders of the calibre of Simpson, Merckx and LeMond is a pretty serious pedigree.

    The meaning of 'Deore'

My dad has a couple of Ultegra reels. I know very little about fishing but I'm guessing they're better than 105, and almost as good as Dura-Ace but a bit heavier and cheaper.

    Saracen Trekker 1989 (/1990)

500LX mechs and STI push-button shifters from Shimano's '90 range are correct for an '89/early '90 standard Trekker (i.e. not the double U-brake and Deore II Trekker Competition which was in the catalogue). Apart from the sprung saddle the one above is the same as mine which I've had from new.

    1990 Fire Mountain questions

http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Hersteller/Shimano/Gruppen.html#90mtb doesn't list push-button STI shifters like yours with 300LX, but ST-M050 levers seem likely (plastic unfortunately, so a prime candidate for an upgrade). The rear U-brake is higher up the range than 300LX too, and has to be...

    1990 Fire Mountain questions

The blocks in the link are the original type for those cantis (which are the same as on my Saracen), but with careful use of washers it should be possible to use V-brake blocks on them instead. While they won't look as original it does mean you can get a bigger braking surface and better...

    Geoffrey Butler

Geoffrey Butler Cycles was a shop in Croydon so it's likely to be one of theirs. The shop closed about a month ago, but it looks like they're still in business online so maybe they will have found some records clearing the place out.

That's the one. It wouldn't have been a Halfords exclusive because I got it from a local independent shop (Harpenden Cycles). The '89 catalogue didn't include a standard Trekker and from what I've read the M500 groupset was new in '90 so you're probably right about it being a dealer network...

Re: Re: There's one a few pages back on this thread, but it's from the wrong side so not the best. I'll try to remember to take some more next time it's out of the shed.

Mine's an '89 or early '90 Tange steel frame, sold as last year's model when I got it in the autumn of 1990. It's got plastic-covered Exage cantilevers on the front which might have been whatever they had in the parts bin, seatstay mounted U-brake on the back, and the rest of the groupset is 500LX.

Like that. A couple of years older than mine, and you got a front U brake which later ones only had on the Trekker Comp. If that crankset and cassette are original they look virtually brand new.

FREE: '89 Saracen parts, Shimano QRs

Those square grips will be the originals, cut down to fit the bar ends - they're the same as on my '90 Trekker.

88..Trekker Gear Cable vs U Brake query

Re: Doing a quick Google image search for chainstay u-brakes, in most of the pictures where it's visible the rear mech cable does go through that hole.

Here's mine. 1990 Trekker, owned from new, and I've still got the original saddle, bottle, reflectors and amber wall tyres in the shed. Finally replaced the bent, rusty old chain and it's running better than ever.

88..Trekker Gear Cable vs U Brake query

Re: My Trekker is a year later so has the U-brake mounted on the seat stays, which on its own isn't much help (though I think the bosses still have the holes in and they're no use for cable routing up there). But the original Shimano brake blocks mine came with are the low profile grey ones...

Replacement pads for Shimano Deore U-brakes and Exage cantis

Thanks for the advice. Will take a punt on some inexpensive V-brake pads and make them fit with washers.

Exage 500LX replace or upgrade advice

Re: Re: I'm also resurrecting a 1990 Saracen with a 500LX groupset (or at least most of one, with a couple of parts-bin substitutions). Last time I had it running the STI shifters were causing trouble. The front mech wouldn't stay on the big ring - it fell off as soon as I let go of the button...

Replacement pads for Shimano Deore U-brakes and Exage cantis

Hi all. Digging out my 1990 Saracen Trekker from the depths of the shed and trying to get it back into rideable condition. It could do with some new brake pads - it still has the originals and they're rock hard as well as worn. Problem is that the brakes are so old that it's tricky to find out...

After lurking in these parts for a while, here's my 1989/90 Trekker: It's not the greatest picture I know. I'll get round to taking some better ones eventually. And don't worry, I've sorted out the front brake cable so it doesn't sit so high. Bought in 1990, but sold as the previous year's...
