Great solution. I'm a bit leery of drilling my stem though. If my headset had a spacer I'd just replace it with a hanger. It is so tight you can't even fit a spacer between the nuts. I set up my Miyata triple cross as 9 speed and ran it with old 7 speed front and rear mechs and a 3x7 chainset with no issues. I was running the front shifter friction though so indexing was not an issue. I can't see why a 9 speed chainset would be any different with a friction front or a 9...

Ya, that's the price of quality these days apparently. I think they are fully rebuildable if that would ease the pain. Fortunately I managed to replace my HPX after a bus ran over my original one after a crash on traintracks.

Front derailleurs are dumb so I wouldn't look to it for problems. If the spacing is different between rings it will be the front shifter that will cause issues.
