Time to build another average bike - 1992 Claud Butler Spectre.

A good, honest 531 frame and a DX groupset. What’s not to like? The sort of thing I’m half heartedly looking out for. My son wants a bike to get around on. There are probably plenty out there.

What’s the story with that headset?

    Olmo Monoroller

That is a cool piece of kit. Years ago I saw an advert in the back of Cycling Weakly for something called a Rollerturbo. A chap made them out of his shed or garage I think. I went to somewhere near to St Ives (not the Cornish one) down the A14 to have a look. I was perhaps the Mk 2 or 3...

Help kitting out a 97 Kona Kilauea for touring

I think maybe I recognise that bike from the CTC site? Are you going to put everything on the back? It might be an idea to include a bar bag to bring some weight forwards? Also useful for taking valuables with you when you stop. I’m planning to tour on my old mountain bike and have got a...

    New Tyre Question - Noise

I shall try altering some variables. That is pretty hardcore @fettler ! Going so fast you shred the rubber from the tyres! I am not that fast. Neither is my balance that good. I have the forks held in a bracket. I tried to do rollers properly back in the first lockdown. I crashed a few...

    New Tyre Question - Noise

Just over 100psi I reckon. I think this tyre has slightly more drag than the old one. That was a very cheap 23 as well. It had worn down so much though it was very light! I’ll put a little more in before the next session.

    New Tyre Question - Noise

Rather than start a new thread, I’ve edited this one. The tyre I fitted was a 700x23c. When I tried it on the rollers I could feel a bump, bump, bump every time the wheel went round. Not good. I went back up the loft and found another cheap tyre this time in 25c flavour. It is the front...

    New Tyre Question - Noise

Additional. I went back to the stash and found a 700x23c tyre. The tube still seemed slightly too long but not as bad. The smaller 20 section tyre made any stretch seem worse I suspect. Crammed it in there and got the tyre back on and have half inflated it. So far so good.

    New Tyre Question - Noise

I can’t seem to get all of it back in the tyre! I’m replacing the tyre on the fixed bike on the rollers. The cheap one that was on there has developed some alarming looking gaps and splits. 700x23 is the very widest tyre that will fit on there and I have found an old but unused Vittoria...

State of the industry: a running thread

I don’t seem to have a local bike shop. Leisure Lakes (I think) upped and left Wolverhampton to somewhere less on fire or something. I used to go there for things mountain bike. I used to go to Fred Williams for road stuff. They are still there but won’t let you walk in off the street. You...

    Large C Butler only £75

I’m not short but would need to take a run up to get on there. Long legs but short arms? I’m looking at that odd extension to the bottle cage.

    A Shimano M730/32XT hubs question. 6spd or 7spd on a 130mm rear spacing?

When did this change from 130 to 135 happen? I’ve always wondered if the spacing on my 1990 (I think) Kili Flyer Comp was meant for a 130 hub or just badly made/checked. It has always made a mockery of the term quick release. I have to heave it upside down and wrestle the back wheel in by...

    Retrobike Touring.

I’m thinking about security. I know the bigger and heavier a lock is the more secure it is. I have a bang average D shackle lock that I use if I go shopping or something. I don’t want to cart it around as it weighs about the same as my new tent. My route takes me to mostly small places off...
