    1960s 'Martyn Young' 531 build

I think what you are showing there is actually the result of poorly maintained tooling for the "blanking out" process during manufature of the ring, not something that has developed over time. It's a common feature when blanking high strength light alloy components if the punch to die clearance...

Apparently SR abbreviated it to fit into the available space!

Saracen model identification help and advice sought

Looks mine had large clearances for the mudguards as well, can't remember if it was on 27s or 700s.

Saracen model identification help and advice sought

I'm no expert on Saracens (or anything else) but the frame looks very similar to a Saracen that passed through my greasy hands a few years ago.

    Single Speed Bike Gear Ratio

Here's the gear inches for 27" wheels, 700C will be a bit lower and 26" lower still.

    Wanted Pre-war 31/32" Clip / Headclip Headset

Hi, I've got these that you can have for £25 plus postage if they're good enough, the clip is nice - the nut not so but has good threads. Definately 31/32" x 30TPI. Very hard to find as you probably already know.

    Olympic?

It'd be nice to think these unidentified forks in my parts bin were by Gios, but don't think they would have made any with mudguard mounts! Anyone want a stab at the manufacturer?

    The British bike thread

It's just occurred to me, how many years do you have to rewind to find a "completely British" bicycle, i.e. without any imported components - the late 50s maybe? Or possibly the Choppers and Shoppers of the 70s?

    The British bike thread

Being Nottingham born and bred Raleigh ruled the roost around here when I was a lad in the late 60s and it wasn't until I joined the local cycling club that I realised that Raleigh were pretty down the pecking order as far as seriously sporting cycles were concerned, their focus was shifting as...

    The British bike thread

Whilst waiting for my car to be MoTd last year I sat in Nottingham Archives browsing through the Raleigh indexes of held documents, one of the accounts documents listed Raleighs companies - I was amazed that they owned so many of the British component manufacturers including Brooks, Bayliss...

    The British bike thread

By the mid 50s even Raleigh had recognised that offering optional equipment on their top bikes was just too expensive - hence they dropped the RRA and the revised Super Lenton took it's place for a couple of years before being replaced itself by the RRA Moderne (with derailleurs shock/horror!)
