    Vintage Steel Bikes, pre 1935

With the great first world war approaching, the French nerve centre of bicycle production and innovation the city of Saint Etienne really took off. Mercier was founded there in 1919, Clement and Ideale saddles set up shop, but before then massive investment in production started around the turn...

Sunday Mornings: A Bike, a Beer and Brunch

There's a new prime minister, political chaos everywhere, there are national strikes planned for next week, the trains are running to a halt, however.... It's going to be a nice day here today, 30C at midday, no chance of rain, so it's time to dust off the old Peugeot clunker and head into town...

    Vintage Pedal Assist

Don't know if there are British engine powered bikes but there are plenty in France/Spain. This one is Peugeot PX10 funky paint finish donor with a two stroke Itom Torino (French) engine. They were reasonably cheap, about equivalent of a new quality drive train of the era, but the fit was...

    Sakae Royale

One of my fondest cycling memories as a teen was picking up my first proper racing bike with this SR chainset on it. Each time I see some of their parts and accessories I'm always impressed by the detail and the quality of anodising, which is perhaps even better than Campagnolo ! I picked this...

    Jacques Mercet (Switzerland)?

This is a new one on me, it's got an expander type seat post, but I don't get the seekers 4000 euro price tag, am I missing something!?

    Best Paint Finish Ever

For a while now I've been on the hunt for fancy paint finishes, thought I'd start a thread! Of course the Italians are famous for it: Colnago with their Decor finishes and De Rosa, Pinarello etc. Personally I like the old Retinato finish and of course Cromovelato (a clear paint over Chrome)...

    Wow! Vintage pedals 😵

Thought I would start a thread about that most overlooked part of the drive chain: the pedals. Here are my most favourite pedals of all time, by Roger Piel. Duralumin bodies, sealed bearings and jewel like futuristic design from the 1950s. Allegedly only 275gr a pair, with bronze bushings. They...

    Colnago 40th anniversary?!

Does this ring any bells with anyone? I've seen 30th anniversary parts and clothing and 50th anniversary, but a 40th? In faux carbon effect? Were there more parts, is there a group?

What would you do: Campagnolo Frankenderailleur

Just picked this up, for cheap! It's a 79 super record with obviously a donor face plate from a gran sport. Mill it down, polish it, paint , anodise? I don't think the back plate is even the same, it's from a much later Super .. 😵

    Stuck seat post: Reversal!

I have one of these very elegant BMC frames with the big aluminium lugs. Unfortunately the seat post system is a disaster, two bolts on a relatively thin aluminium structure, obviously eventually it's cracked! It will hold a seat post, but it'll slip after a few days. I'm looking for a method...

    Funky Steel Frame Designs

First up one of my all time favourites: a Mecacycle Turbo fillet brazed split seat tube lo pro. This one is quite plain, Columbus SL but there are versions with no bolt seat post/stem systems and fairings but I like the simplicity of this version. Also quite a few aluminium versions and very...

    Bianchi Titanium Identification

Anyone recognise this Bianchi titanium. I've had a good look online, and it's not a Bianchi Matta, the down tube is completely different.

The last road bike you'll ever buy ..

I'm not quite there yet, but in another decade I daresay I'll be buying the 'last bike', the one that I'll ride every day into my dotage while the old knees will still carry me. I've been thinking about it a bit lately as my cycling friend from work is just about to retire and he's on the prowl...

    Buying advice for France/French eBay

I've had someone ask me to post buying advice for UK buyers, dealing with the inscrutable French! I've had a fair bit of experience, in both face to face and online transactions with our continental cousins. Starting off with eBay: it's not that popular in France, as there are a quite a few...

    Karma Tour de France stuff

After a good haul and autograph hunt in the riders village, I've got 4 (count em!) Polkadot Carrefour hats to give away (I bagged a bunch). Maybe an official Skoda cap also. Asking for postage only.

    Does Tha Ride Tandem?

Have spoken a few times to the owner of this lovely latte 1940s Barra aluminium brazed tandem and we've come to an agreement on a reasonable price. A few questions for tandem owners though: 1. Do you use it often, or is it only a 'special occasion' bike? 2. Would it go in the back of a Volvo 7...

Bonded 1980s Peugeot oddity; Alu or Carbon

This is a rare find, I think! Seller says it's aluminium, but all the Peugeot I know from this era are Vitus 979 style. This is much more like the PY10 FC as ridden by Robert Millar. Weird....!

    Cinelli identify: not an SC

Unfortunately the seller has posted only close up photos of the frame, with few details, I'm assuming it's been repainted, not a Super Corsa? Chrome underneath? Any thoughts?

    Mystery Spade bottom bracket shell

This has come up locally for pretty cheap, I'm leaning towards an Italian frame but not sure. Any ideas? It's my least favourite frame colour, green, but it does come with a campag headset and bottom bracket.

    Vintage Colnago Carbon rims?

Came across these recently on French eBay (I'm building a 'nude' Colnago Titanio stripped back to the raw Titanium): Colnago branded carbon effect (definitely aluminium) rims. Complete revelation, never seen the like! I'm assuming they're made by Ambrosio, who made a number of Colnago rims...
