I want to make a quill->ahead adapter for an bike with 1 1/4" threaded steerer. Now I plan to grind the extension part of the stem off leaving a 28.6mm quill that I can simply clamp a normal ahead stem onto. This might not work (stem may be out of round from welding) hence I want to do it...
