My lovely and very original 1986 Fisher Montare! - More PICS

Hi all! It's been a little while since I've posted. I thought I'd share the end result of a Fisher journey spent over the last year. I made a lot of purchases and subsequently liquidated a good bit of the "Fish"ers I caught. The end result -- My wife is now on a Yellow 1988 Montare (NOS...

Steel rigid fork needs painted: DIY or Autobody Shop

I bought a rigid steel fork that seems ok for my Merlin build. I want it painted black. Should I just sand it up and spray paint it, or does that just end up being crappy and an autobody shop baked on is the only way to go? Thx

Merlin pressed BB w/ Grease Guard - Advice Please

I've read various posts across the web that seem to indicate that you can remove this BB by remove two circlips, and then hammering the spindle out with a hammer and wood. Mine however, does not seem to want to move. I am wondering if it is because of the grease guard and perhaps it will not...

Been Fishing, and been catching --- Projects Galore

Being new to the forum, I'm just now catching on to the proper project thread format and process. I did throw a few pics up of some bikes I had, but really other than my sons Cannondale (of which it is finished and I'll close that thread out with some "after" shots soon), I've yet to do a good...

91 Merlin Potts Type II fork - Threaded or Threadless?

I'm doing a 91 Merlin and I'm wondering if threadless is just "all wrong" for it, or if its acceptable. I need to order a type II for it, and I'm debating what to do. So threadless was probably invented a few years before you'd have seen it on bikes, but what year was threadless introduced...

Help me understand why I like old late 80's Fishers...

They were produced in Japan, and of modest quality for the day. All of the specimens I can locate are at least a little rough. But I just can't seem to resist them. Is it the narrow tubes? The relaxed geometry? Upright rider position...? Or is it my early cyclist exposure to them? Is that...

    Clarity on brake studs please?

I believe this to be correct. But... just for clarity. Brake studs are either canti (also known as V) -- or --- u-brake (also known as roller cam) Is this right? And never the two shall mix right. So an old Fisher with the u-brake underneath the chain stays should only get XT u-brakes...

Ever buy a bike for parts and...

When it shows up... you just can't bring yourself to do it? Just happened to me again. A 1988 Fisher CR-7. The chips in the paint led me to believe it was a little rough. However almost all the chips it has you are looking at in this pic. The rest of the bike is so nice. All original...

Seems 1" suspension forks didn't age well from what I'm finding. Can I buy a new high end fork with a 1" steerer anywhere? Any pointers are appreciated.

Stuck cranks - Dremel Carnage Inside

So much for the Shimano FC-M290 cranks. They weren't very good stuff to begin with and were rusty from years of abuse. This is from that Cannondale I bought for my son. It looks like I'm going to abandon all hope for almost all of the components it came with. I've got a good bit of LX for it...

Suntour Seatpost Quick Release | And a Fisher Saddle

Looking for a QR skewer for my Fisher Montare. Silver early 90s late 80s. US based would be best for this but maybe could work it out UK Euro sale for something so small...? Cheap(ish) shipping? Also -- Still hunting Fisher Saddles in very good to like new condition. Thx

Paid too much - New Teardown Pic on page 2

It was bound to happen. Bought an old Cannondale M300 for my son today. Only paid $75, but when I got it home, buyers remore set in. It has some pretty low end componentry and a lot of scratches and needs completely rebuilt for lube, new bearings, and the fork (Rock Shox Quadra 21) needs...

    NOS SQ-M730 Quick Release

Probably the only M730 I can afford in NOS. I noted a bunch went across the forum not too long ago. Hoping someone has one to move and is ready to do so.

What the heck happened to me?

Not more than a month or so ago, I re-acquired my old Grove Innovations Ti bike. Since then, I've been infatuated with all things retro-MTB. And in particular the brands sold my our small local MTB shop in the early 1990s. I now have a Merlin hard tail, and two Fisher Montare framesets. And...

Parts for 1988 Fisher Montare / Saddle, Stem, M730 stuff

Preface: I am in the US. Fisher Montare frame is yellow. I need most everything but the headset and BB. It should have M730 and an M731 U-Brake. NOS is preferred but good and clean is fine as I am trying to control price to some extent. I'm not in a huge hurry so little by little but...
