After polishing alloy and steel components, like cranks, what do people recommend to prevent it from oxidizing again over time? Lacquer?

Finally getting my 92 Marin Eldridge grade Winter hack (Summer been and gone hasn't it) sorted. Bought the frame with the seatpost stuck and cut off, so had to melt it out with caustic soda. Can anybody confirm the correct Seatpost diameter? I had the Vernier on it and I think it's 26.4, but...

I've got original panaracer smoke/dart and I've also got the modern reissues. However the modern versions are just like the originals i.e. useless compared with modern tyres. So what I'm after is recommendations for modern tyres (tubeless) which still look retro.
