Is it possible to shim a 1 inch threadless steerer to take a 1 1/8 ahead stem, the proflex 856 I've just bought is 1 1/8 headset with a 1 inch steerer shimmed to fit!!! Seems to have been fitted that way from new, or do I just have to find a 1 inch aheadstem???

looking for as above, just purchased an 856 frame from ebay but has no cable stops with it, unbelievebly ive got one in my tool box left over from my original 856 build in 1997 where i ran a full cable on the rear mech so didn't use two of them, would be most grateful if anybody could help out...
