Best mudguards for a steel frame road bike with no eyelets?

Hello everyone, I am renovating a nice old lugged steel Holdsworth road frame for use as a commuter bike but it has no eyelets on the front or rear droputs for attaching mudguards. Has anyone tried out mudguards that would fit a frame like this and if so are there any brands or models that...

Good MTB routes in North Kent/Surrey

Just wondering if anyone could recommend good mtb circuits of about 20 miles in length (i.e., a one day ride for my celery stick legs) within a couple of hours drive from South East London (Lewisham). I've done Bewl Water a few times which is good but quite sedate and now want to get a bit more...

Looking for some traditional spec drop handlebars

I'm renovating a nice old Raleigh Sirroco, unfortunately the existing handlebars have had it. Having looked online for a replacement most handlebars now appear to be black painted and too thick for the stem (which takes 25.4mm diamater bars). I found a couple of ok options at SJS cycles but they...

    Tyre squirm

I recently dug out my nice light titanium hardtail complete with nice light Continental Competition Pro 2 tyres. Sadly I found the tyres that worked well when I was a svelte 11 stone squirmed around unpleasantly during cornering now that I am a more 'mature' rider (about 14 stone). I guess this...

Idea to help streamline selling on this forum

The debate about how to organise selling on the forum has got me thinking. One post per item may clog up the "for sale" section but it does allow buyers to see at a glance which posts they need to read to find whatever component they want to purchase. In order to have the best of both worlds...

Can anyone recommend a map holder to fit on the handlebars?

I'm looking around for a map holder to fit on my handlebars but there don't seem to be many around and those I have seen online don't look very robust so can anyone recommend a good one? Cheers, Adam

    Single speed spoke snapping woes

I have been single speeding on my nice old steel commuter bike for a couple of month now. First I tried a fixed gear which was great but after about three weeks I snapped a spoke on the rear wheel. I then installed a rear wheel with singlespeed freewheel (not nearly as much fun) and lo and...

    Has anyone used Militec?

This is supposed to be a really good dry lube that you cure onto the metal using heat. I understand it was originally a gun lube but is good for most other metal-metal lubrication. Seems scarce in the UK so I was wondering if any of you guys have tried it as it seems ideal for use on a bike...

Top hat ferrules for a Proflex

For some strange reason my 1997 Proflex Animal has hose guides on the down tube where the cable stops should be for the rear gear cable. The ideal solution would be to put a couple of tinymetal top hat shaped ferrules into the hose guides to convert them cable stops. Does anyone know where you...

    Fork judder under braking

I have a basic but quite nice steel framed Holdsworth road bike that suffers from pronounced fork judder under braking. Has anyone here got any suggestions as to solutions for this problem? Cheers, Adam

    Rockshox leg bolt woes

I was recently tinkering with giving my Judy Race 2000 forks and managed to lose one of the little allen bolts with a crush washer that goes into the end of the leg - doh! Does anyone have a spare one they want to sell - it's the non damper leg so the bolt is solid, not drilled? Cheers!

    Saddle leather repair

Am attempting to restore an old Flite saddle on which the leather has become unstuck from the plastic base at the back of the saddle. Does anyone here know which kind of glue works best for this kind of leather to plastic bond - I guess it has to be flexible but waterproof? Cheers!

Good bye 9 speed, hello 8 speed

I am fed up with weedy 9 speed chains and cassettes wearing out v. fast and generally letting me down under pressure and so am planning to switch my Proflex Animal from 9 speed to 8 speed. I have the 9 speed Shimano XT m750 brake lever/shifter combo and am wondering if I can run 8 speed with...

    Paypal perplexes me!

As much of our retro transactions are by Ebay and Payal I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on the following: when I buy something by on Ebay using Paypal the money comes straight out of my bank account and into the account of the seller, even if I have a zero balance. However a...

Question for all you m900 XTR experts

My 1997 Proflex Animal is now the proud wearer of an m900 XTR crankset. I know its not quite period correct but it is such a nice crankset I couldn't resist it and sure enough it is great, light, strong and decent looking. At the moment I am just running a middle ring because, rather strangely...

    Question for experienced Ebayers

This is really a general question about Ebay wisdom but I guess it might be justified and useful for us retro heads here given that so much of the retro scene centres on Ebay. Basically I have used Ebay for a while to buy loads of bike stuff but recently had something to sell. However the...
