Are these Herse cantilever brake arms?

I've asked about this on the Classic Rendezvous site, but nobody has acknowledged knowing of Herse brakes with these forked ends on the arms. There seems to be a prevalence of opinion that these are Herse, but I'm still a bit skeptical. Maybe they are Toei copies? Anybody familiar with these...

Follis tandem decal examples, +/- 1959?

I'm looking for photographs of decals from a Follis tandem, circa 1959, so I can have them recreated. I've just built up a frameset using parts from period-correct to about 1980, with the goal of creating a good rider: https://flic.kr/s/aHskvKLQid. May as well make it look good, too. Thanks...

Unusual Shimano 600 crank, three arm?

I have a set of unusual Shimano 600 cranks (photo attached). The chainring spider has three short arms. Can't find anything online about these. Can somebody provide some information? The date code is AD, which I interpret as 1976. Thanks!

Schwinn Cycletruck '49 on Craig's List

I've been corresponding with the owner of this 1949 Schwinn Cycletruck: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/bik/2029039482.html. He wants more than I can spend -- "must get $400" -- but it could be a good buy for someone. The detail pics show original fenders, wheels (including what appears to be...

    My 1970 Lygie road bike

OK, I cheated. I don't have this bike anymore. But, here I am riding it in a criterium in 1970 wearing the green, white, and black of the San Diego Bicycle Club competition team. Been having some fun scanning old slides.

    Date this GT?

I was poking around Craig's List and spotted this GT: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/bik/2034099177.html. I don't know much about them, as I was retiring from the sport about the time they were coming in. I'm guessing late '80s, though. Anybody have more knowledge? Thanks!

    My brother's keeper, cyclewise

My brother called me last night rather upset. The Trek I built up for him in 1982 had broken through the top tube and lug at the head tube. Trashed. He was bummed. After all, only 28 years of hard commuting and the frame breaks? Well, I told him to bring the bike over and I'd see what I could...

Campi brake models, 1970s to 1980s?

I just posted pics separately of the new-old Olmo I picked up http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=116122. I'm trying to identify the vintage of the brakes. I'm familiar with the early-'70s vintage Campi set, shown in the rusty example below from my just-acquired Medici. (I purchased...

Olmo, can you tell me about this one?

I just picked up this 58cm Olmo Nuovo Super Sprint for a very low price. Equipment appears to be Nuovo Record, with the exception of the front deraileur which I don't recognize. Anyone know what the front der is? Tubing is Columbus. Seat post and saddle are clearly not original. Frame number...

1980 Crested Butte Klunker Classic videos

Repack Rider posted these links months ago, but they bear repeating. Some fine history. I'm in the second part riding the Lowell-Knight Procruiser and wearing the Skid-Lid helmet. Charlie and friends are everywhere. Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDUe9BFPrzg. Part 2...

Just for kicks, touring in '76

Just for kicks, thought I'd post some vintage pics of touring in '76. First is of my '71 Raleigh Professional (repainted following a criterium crash a couple years earlier) set up for a big trip. 23.5" frame with 40.25" wheelbase. To fit clinchers and fenders on a bike made for sew-ups was a...

    New find, 1979 Trek 730

Hi, folks - I just picked up a 1979 Trek 730 on a whim. Frame #I4D9099. I'd appreciate your comments. Many or most of these were sold as framesets -- I sold some of them from a shop in San Diego, California. Frames and forks are 531 DB with Campagnolo frametips. The frame is straight and in...

Crested Butte 1984, Korean bike mag

This is, in part, a story of life's circles. Four years ago, my daughter and I went to a pool party hosted for her soccer team by one of the team moms. The mom and I did some chatting that drifted to mountain bikes. Turns out, she was a young Crested Butte resident in 1984, and rode the Crested...

    Racing team, 1971

I've been posting old mountain bike stuff in other forums, but thought I'd share some road bike history here. I've attached a local newspaper article about our San Diego Bicycle Club junior team from 1971. I'm the "Kevin" pictured and quoted. My bike in the photo was "Lygie" on the nameplate...

Political action via bike seats, 1979

In 1979, the US embassy in Tehran was siezed by locals and 52 US citizens were held captive for 444 days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_hostage_crisis. The US bicycle industry quickly shifted to a war footing. First to respond was Persons-Majestic... I don't believe enough of these were...

1981 Ritchey is still my ride

I bought this bike new in 1981. It was one of the first batch of three Ritcheys shipped to San Diego by Mountain Bikes (Charlie and Gary). The frame wasn't configured for desert mountain riding or offroad touring, since it had only one bottle mount and no rack mounts. So, I had two more bottle...

    San Diego, 1981

Here's a pic from a 1981 ride in San Diego County, California. This shot was taken from the top of a mining road above the tiny town of Banner, several mile east of Julian in the Laguna Mountains. Photo taken at approximately lat. 33.050175, lon. -116.538216. I invited the folks from up north in...

The BEST mountain bike in San Diego, circa 1980

This was the first purpose-built mountain bike frame in San Diego. Tubular forks and aluminum rims had just hit the market for 26" BMX bikes. However, the tires were still old-fashioned Schwinn cruiser knobbies. I had just assembled the bike in this photo, since it has the original primer on the...
