    Mercian on BBC News Derby.

I was going to say the same myself, but as someone who has never bought a new bike, I’m very far from potential customer material anyway, so I’m probably not well placed to judge. The timing doesn’t feel great, but I guess we’ll see…

    Mercian on BBC News Derby.

Yes, the price for fitting decals is one reason I didn’t use Mercian when I was looking to get a frameset restored. They are definitely on the expensive side in general. But this was before the new ownership, so they’ve not upped their prices.

    Mercian on BBC News Derby.

The website certainly looks a lot slicker than the old one. They’re obviously catering to current trends with what they’re offering, which explains why I’m not interested in any of them 😆.

    Mercian on BBC News Derby.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cze63n0zynjo The headline ‘failing bike firm’ is not at all correct as far as I know, they didn’t have financial problems, they wanted to sell the business for a variety of reasons, but didn’t find a buyer before the voluntary liquidation happened. Which is...

Bikes and... wait for it, wait for it, Churches!

I was a bit dubious about that particular tidbit, as it seemed odd to me that a small village considerably outside of Sheffield would have a grave robbery problem, but everything I’ve found online refers to it as ‘The watch house’, so it seems to be true. I’d like to know more about the story...

Bikes and... wait for it, wait for it, Churches!

Church of St Nicholas, High Bradfield, South Yorkshire. The church is mainly from the 1480s. More of note is the building in front of the church, which is built into the church walls and was built in 1745 as a watch house, apparently 'to guard against grave robbers looking for fresh corpses for...

Ah, that's good to know that the fittings and fixtures were all kept together. I got that sort of impression, and hoped it was the case, but I didn't know for sure. It sounds like the name is in good hands, let's hope so...

Mercian didn't actually 'go under', they went into into voluntary liquidation because they had no-one to sell the business onto at the time – but then it (the brand/name at least) was subsequently bought after a gap in trading, so I'm not surprised it was all a bit messy and hard to get your...

    6.5kg 1980's Paino Steel Roadie

That is indeed a crazy weight for a steel-framed bike, especially considering 1849g is not especially light for a small frame to begin with. But more importantly, it looks fantastic, a great combination of old and new. And it's one of those bikes that just looks fast standing still. I'm not too...

Karma 1980 Raleigh Record Ace free to a good home

Proof that you can never have too many Raleighs! 😆. @Guinessisgoodforyou if you plan to return this to closer to original spec I’d be happy to take the saddle currently on it in return for a suitable donation to charity. Just a thought, I hope you don’t mind the suggestion.

    Today's Ride

It was an interesting morning out in The Peaks as far as weather conditions go – it was either warm in the bright sunshine or I was riding through mist and getting rather cold. Some mist was still around in the valley around Monsal Head, above is the view from one direction. And this is the...

    Viscount Aerospace.. but which one?

An absolutely top job as always 🤩. There can’t be too many Viscounts out there which have had a full nut and bolt restoration, which makes it all the more worthwhile.

Concorde restoration - on a budget

As far as I recall from looking into it quite some years ago, that's not always the case, it's a bit less clear-cut than that. But you may be correct, this is only going on the sketchy information online.

    Spotted on the street

This klunker-style build is something a bit different to the usual. It's a shame the saddle and shifter aren't quite in keeping with the look, but they definitely get bonus points for the wooden mudguards.

Sorted large saddle bag (for use with a support rack, or with support included)

Yeah, I am wondering if just strapping a bag to it is the easiest solution. It's just for trips into town, not proper touring or anything.

Sorted large saddle bag (for use with a support rack, or with support included)

Thanks very much for that - unfortunately it is too long – I guess mine only really designed for either a much smaller top bag (more like 15cm long), or as a support for a larger saddle bag. I think I'll change the thread title to see if anyone has a suitable larger saddle bag which might be...

Sorted large saddle bag (for use with a support rack, or with support included)

That sounds excellent, thanks. Can I just check the length of the bag to be sure it’ll fit okay? Thanks.
