Ted has replied, nothing confirmed or paid for yet, but looks most likely person I'll go with?

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

Ok so I've contacted Super Ted, since I'm gonna be very near him next month. Not sure if he does anything remotely off the peg/ standard but would be good to see him again. BTR and Curtis topping the short list right now otherwise since both offer a proper 27.5.

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

There's some truley amazing frames built in Taiwan, but I want to support localish builders.

This is excellent advice, which probably makes a Curtis/ BTR more likely. Cotic said if I'm going to go down the 27.5 route a plus tyre would work, but they don't think as well as a the 29er. I suppose one of the considerations I'm having is what if 27.5 does become impossible to find? But...

Singular make their bikes in Taiwan though. Which doesn't fit what I'm looking for.

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

Just to reiterate since my initial post was unclear. I want something made in UK, or if Europe available in UK. (Sour were, but it seems no longer). 853 or equivalent really. Off the peg, but could try to save more to say go to Curtis to get their off the peg?

Seen these in person and they are fine bikes, but not really what I'm looking for.

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

Got a lot of time for Russ and Laura, they talk a lot of sense and put their money where their mouth is. I know they get given stuff to test and when they buy it, it would be heavily discounted. But that doesn't seem to hold them back and Russ has stated multiple times on the channel that...

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

These are made in Taiwan now, no longer UK. I want to support UK/ European builders as an economic choice. Fully aware of the huge talent of some of the smaller Taiwanese build shops. Just want to support local.

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

Just to be clear and I didn't mention this in the initial post orginally. I can't afford custom right now. But I would consider paying more for off the peg from a smaller builder? Did Ted James used to be known as Super Ted? I know he was a superb mechanic if it's the same person (looks to be)...

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

Added Curtis to the same bracket as Mason Raw in terms of price, though this looks like it could get rowdyer??

UK/ European made off the peg Steel hardtails

So I'm saving up for a modern Hardtrail, something more the xc/ bikepacking end, that can handle trails that are at least what you'd find in a modern XC course (so a bit of jumping, drop-offs and rocks and roots). I'd prefer a higher end steel, though I get modern bikes are heavier than some of...

    Paul Comp in the UK

Freshtripe are brilliant and stock special order Paul as has been said. I think Keep Peddling and certainly Woods get hold of some of the more colourful bits sometimes.

There's a short cut that depending on numbers we may take anyways. That cuts off the sloggiest bit of climbing too.
