    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

You could very well be right. I found a picture showing how the '91 year models on sorted this out for cantis. Looks like some steel or alloy mounts were affixed over the carbon tubes at the right level.

    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

I'll bet your lovely Team Stumpy is lighter than the Epic too despite the Specialized marketing speil. I was a bit shocked when I lifted it off the stand. It's way heavier than my larger framed Epic road bikes, but then they use aluminium lugs and the carbon tubes must be thinner gauge.

    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

I don't know the reason why the U-brake was used rather than the cantis, which was what the rest of the range swapped to in '89. In 1990, both the Epic and the now introduced Epic Ultimate (cro-mo version) still retained U-brakes. The only other model to use a U-brake in 1989 was the 15"...

    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

I've made some more progress with me black beauty and am almost there. The rear wheel took a lot of degreasing and fiddling about with washers to get the spacing on the shortened axle just right, but I'm happy with the outcome and it's not required any re-dishing to be done. I also mentioned...

    Manual Sharkfin chain deflector set-up

Most of these sharkfins now come to us 2nd+ hand, and so the original packaging has long since vanished. But as I have a NOS one that's about to go onto my current build I thought it was worth posting these simple instructions that appear on the back of the pack. It's not something I recall...

    1988 Team Stumpjumper

You might as well go the whole hog now and stick spoke and frame reflectors on too. While I'm at it (or a tit if you prefer!!), you've put the toe straps in the wrong way - buckle out from the pedal not the toe clip. I'm glad I've got all that off my pigeon chest.

1989 Specialized Stumpjumper EPIC - Carbon tubes with steel lugs - USA

@Repacker Well remembered! I'm nearly finished my own Epic build and will get my thread on this updated shortly.

So many bike sites seem to loathe "retro". Why?

The funny thing is that all of our retro stuff was the 'in' product 30+ years ago, marketed to the hilt, and uber cool. When mountain biking started to really take off it was the local roadies that turned their noses up at us colourful posers, as we were definitely non-traditional. I got stopped...

    Anyone recognise these QR Skewers

Apart from the skewers, that's a lovely looking wheel!

    Specialized S-Works Epic Ultimate

I suppose it depends on how thick the carbon is at that point to determine whether it is a materially significant gouge.

    Great thread, thanks

    XT pedal disassembly

Bloody hell. Shimano don't make it easy do they! Cages off first sounds sensible and I've checked and the bolts are free so that's the easy part.

    XT pedal disassembly

Please can someone tell me what tool is required to remove (and reinstall) the end cap on XT flat pedals - M731's in this case? I have just acquired a set and they need greased. While we're on the topic of grease, any recommendations for grease guns that can work with WTB hubs? Thanks all.

GT Outpost on eBay US - Outrageous price..

It seems to have vanished, so now I can't be outraged! Scrub that, it's back again...and feck me, that is outrageous!

    Holy Grail XTR Part!?!?

It's a top flight oxymoron though isn't it. For the 1995 moneybags customer who wants the best of everything but hasn't a clue. I have to say though, as well as the DD I did not realise that there were XTR M910 hubs, so that's been an edoocayshun

What are all you short arms complaining about; the racer's choice of length! Great find @CTK

    1992 Litespeed dream build

Very very nice. Those bottle cages reminded me of a titanium pair (can't recall the brand) I fitted to my road bike in the late 90s. Super light but on a practical level completely hopeless. They were just too flexy - a 750ml bottle would be shaken out on anything but a smooth road. You're...
