Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

I know very little about Minerva, I'm afraid. The company was founded in 1933, I've read, inspired by the automobile manufacturer of the same name. They were traders, more than manufacturers, it seems, so it seems logical that their products would end up elsewhere. OTOH, the bulk of their...

This is a Minerva currently for sale in Belgium. Zoom in a bit to see the M:

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

I own a bike with that very same "M", branded Cycles Tuyttens. It also has a tubing decal that says something like "tubi accaio speciale Minerva", IIRC. Can't check right now as I am away from home and haven't got a picture on my phone.

    Identify Raleigh frame

Almost certainly Belgian. The Netherlands were inundated with Belgian frames during the seventies and eighties. Most were delivered to local bike shops fully painted but without serial numbers or decals, after which said shops branded them as their own. Some added their own serial number, but...

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

That "M" panto suggests the frame was made in Belgium by Minerva.

    Identify Raleigh frame

Looks like a seventies frame to me. The absence of a serial number makes me doubt it being a Raleigh. The seatpost diameter should tell us whether the 531c decal could be legit.

I suspect they wanted the customer to have more options than just AX. Which turned out to be a good decision, as AX disappeared from the market pretty quickly.

Raleigh Road Ace Frame and forks

Interesting frame. 1984 model, so serial should be late '83 or early to mid-'84. Dropouts were Gipiemme. Built to be equipped with Shimano AX, hence the over-the-BB cable routing. Nice! 👍

20min YouTube Cycling Documentary: "The Lost Merckx" with Gerry Shields

That is wonderful! Thanks for posting. Interesting to hear mr Shields refer to Ferdinand Kessels as Merkx' manager, as well as to hear how the franchise deals with Clements and others were actually organised: by selling the decal sets. I suspect that was one of mr Kessels' management tasks.

If that frame was actually brazed to custom order by Mr Coelho you've got a nice collectors item on your hands, I'd say. BTW, I am aware of the Spirit of '78: C&V events in Europe 2025. Should you participate, please let us know how it went, if you don't mind.

Any tips on repairing vintage brakes?

Bring the spring and show it to the (semi-)professional traders present as well. I have had good luck with that in the past. BTW, mrs non-fixie and I are also getting ready for the Retroronde. One of the nicest events of the year. :)

Weinmann used a similar spring BITD. This may or may not be easier to find. Pic courtesy of Velobase: I shall have a look, but don't believe I have a spare. 😟

    Retro Portuguese Bicycle

And then there's that one American who actually does know almost everything about vintage bicycles. :) How about you go teach Chatgpt about bicycles, @juvela ? Seeing that the bunny brand does not appear in that list makes me think it could indeed be a local shop brand. @ClaudiaSilva , as...

    Retro Portuguese Bicycle

Bem-vinda, Claudia! Nice bike. Good colours, too. 😁 One thing about the internet is that it is dominated by Americans. Finding information about stuff that Americans don't know about (like a Portuguese bicycle brand) using American software can sometimes be quite a challenge, I have found...

Advice on buying first vintage road bike?

That there's really nothing new. A couple pics from a hundred or so years ago. Low gears? Check. Wide tyres? Check. 650B? Check.
