You can get extenders, they are essentially a quill stem without the bar mount but I'm not sure how good they are, maybe some folk can feed back, I've never used one. You can in theory have the steerer pressed out and a replacement pushed in. I've had that done before but you'll need to find...

If I'd found that I'd be chuffed. Never properly scratched the e-stay itch. Tried with the same bike in red, bought off here, arrived with a hugely crumpled and split seat tube. I'd try and save it if I could. I wouldn't be king to period correct, I'd throw modern bits at it after a respray...
