Bikes and... wait for it, wait for it, Churches!

It does make me wonder how specific certain vows might have been, let’s just say that.

    Wanted 26.0mm quill stem - 70-80mm long - can be rough/tatty looking

I'm after a 26.0mm clamp quill stem - 70-80mm long - can be rough/tatty looking as I'll be spraying it black. As I don't mind it being rough I was thinking of about £10 posted, really, if that's possible... Thanks

    Today's Ride

With the discussion about the climbs out of Hathersage in Derbyshire earlier in this thread, I got to thinking – what if I did a ride stringing all the five climbs together, doing them in clockwise order? So today I did exactly that. It wasn't as painful as I was anticipating, although the...

What size frame shall I restore?

Well, you can do more about a frame being a bit too small than it being too large. It sounds like I’m pretty much the same size as @winjohn and I ride bikes from 56-60cm. For me a 56 means quite a long seat post, but I find they still ride nicely. I agree with the above, 60cm would definitely...

1980s chromed 'Bob Read Cycles' restomod

Cheers. Yes, you’re probably right about the decal design being part of the issue I have with them. The design makes me think of an 80s supermarket or something, rather than something that belongs on a bike. But thinking about it more, I probably will keep them as they are - there seems...

1980s chromed 'Bob Read Cycles' restomod

The other week I picked up this 'Bob Read Cycles' (which was a Doncaster bike shop) stickered bike. I was unable to resist seeing as 1) It cost £20 and 2) It's very shiny. I started a thread to try and find out more about it, and it seems that based on the 'M' engraved on the seat stay caps, it...

1993 Condor Professional 653 (Dave Yates built)

Thanks! A Condor without a frame number is definitely odd, but of course these things do happen. I had an early Orbit which had no frame number at all, but it was 100% an Orbit. The good thing about the nicer Condors is that there's no mistaking them due to those pantographs. I just checked and...

Wanted 26.2mm seat post - black

I'm after a black 26.2 seat post. As long as it's not too scruffy, I'm not too fussed, just needs to be black and be at least 200mm total length. Thanks

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

I think 1980 would make sense as a year of manufacture. The parts on it were from 1982-83, but of course it's not hard to imagine that the frame was made a few years earlier and built up into a bike later – especially as it's a mass-produced frame.

    Old Carlton: Dropout/Wheel Size confusion.

Yes, of course, very understandable. I wasn’t looking for you to name and shame anyone. However, what the rear spacing should be would be a question that I would have expected them to ask and it’s quite baffling to me that they didn’t even think to check that before starting any work.

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

Oh, yeah, it' 100% midrange at best. The first thing I noticed when I collected it was the weight of it compared to a proper lightweight. Which wasn't helped by the selection of parts on it, but even as a nearly bare frame it's very noticeably weighty. Once I get the seatpost in a vice to remove...

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

Which reminds me, one odd feature of this bike is that the frame has mudguard eyelets, but the forks don't. The fork is almost certainly original, though, as the bloke I bought it from was only the second owner, and he said the first owner had hardly used it himself (which judging by the...

Front Mech for a TA Cyclotourist triple

Yes, I think something like that was going on. Essentially I was trying to use parts that weren't designed to go together, and so it's not too surprising it didn't really work too well. Sometimes you can get away with that quite easily, other times not, I suppose.

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

Indeed, the serial is what made me mention the Far East in my first post. 1980 would certainly be very possible as a year, I would think. Maybe this is an example of a frameset made in Asia, exported to Belgium, and then finally to Doncaster here in the UK. In which case, I suppose it would be...

    Old Carlton: Dropout/Wheel Size confusion.

Just out of interest (I also live in Sheffield), Butterworths don't do frame repairs themselves as far as I know, so I guess they outsourced the frame repair to someone else local? Someone has messed up here to quite a large degree, sadly...

Front Mech for a TA Cyclotourist triple

I’m glad you found a solution. The line between having enough travel and the FD not fouling the crank arm is a fine one with some of these older triples. To follow up on my solution to using an old Campagnolo FD with a triple, although it did work, I found it so hit and miss I ditched the...

Mystery chromed mid 80s bike with a 'T' serial number and engraved 'M' - Bob Read Cycles stickered

Yes, it does make sense. I was expecting a UK maker, but there's no reason why a bike shop here wouldn't import frames from elsewhere if the price was right. Or, perhaps just as likely, the frame was rebadged with the bike shop decals at some point. It had quite an odd selection of parts on it...
