The shifters and leavers are very cheap plastic parts with stamped steel hardware inside. This groupset is basically brand new for being 34 years old, but this bike was made to hit a price point. This was my first time working on parts like these.

The sm400 appears to have cantaleaver brakes. The catalog specs them as Dia Compe 960. The crusty white one has roller cams.

Pedal clearance makes sense. It's an unusual design for sure. Aluminum at that time is rare. The BMX influence is obvious. They were just figuring things out at the time.

They just dropped the price from $100 to $50. I'm tempted but I don't know if I can do anything with it. If that dent wasn't there I would take it.

This is on marketplace near me. I don't really need another project but I like this bike. I'm not very familiar with this one. It looks like it has a nasty dent on the chainstay. What do you think? It's probably worth the money just for parts.

I think my Monster Fat has a mix of chainrings. I need to look at it. I have thumbie shifters on that bike. It shifts fine. Thumb shifters make life easier. I'm not sure if it would work the same using trigger shifters.
