Hi Corinne ( not sure if you will get this). I was the original screen printer working at the Ryton and then Number 1 estate near Consett. This was early 1981 through to 1985. I was also a focused RR cyclist riding for Ryton Cheviot cycling club and sponsored by been bag ( I still have my vests and ski suit in a box. Thanks everyone - Wow it's great to hear from you!
I will post on the road cycle forum too thanks for the tip! Yes, Mick Bradshaw was a sponsored been bag rider i think...he had a really bent over style so logo's were put on the top of his back upside down so they could be read from the front!
Those black ribbed tights were a best seller and remember making many pairs over the years in the factory in Consett County Durham where they were based before Durham city!
Orange were a great customer of been bag's for many years - Lester Noble came onto the stand at Harrogate with a very rough sketch scribbled on to a scrap of paper that we used to design the original 'spotted' orange jersey - this was then rolled out into many other garments that you will be familiar with Ollie - might even have a few!
Muddy Fox were another customer of hers along with most key brands at the time.
Black and purple sound very 'been bag'The logo was black and white though and was a key colour for the DeRangeD range they did and their all over arrow design - the York rally was always full of bargains!
i don't remember Fat Chance - will ask Mum if she remembers
I will have to keep an eye on ebay - would be good to get a few things!
I will put the catalogue pick up tomorrow afternoon - think you will like it
Thanks again all!!
x
Hi Corrine,Hello Everyone,
I thought you guys would be the ones to ask for any pics and stories/memories you might have about been bag.
My Mum, Molly Lowe (she used to be known as Molly Beens to many in the industry...) set up the company back in the late seventies after making a pair of shorts for my Dad. His mate said 'me too' and soon she was making shorts, jerseys, jackets originally for road cyclists and then in the late 80's early 90's were the forerunners in designing clothing for the Mountain Bike riders that was for a first in cycle clothing in the UK.
Been Bag made clothing for many cycle teams both professional and local clubs and were regulars exhibiting at the CTC raleigh in York, the International Cycle Festival in Harrogate and most of the Mountain Bike races with a tent in a field!
I have an old Been Bag catalogue that I can post pictures of if anyone is interested and might act as a prompt to our ageing memories!
The reason for the post is that despite having had the company for over twenty years we have little to look back on. Mum is in her mid seventies now and I thought it would be nice to put together a scrap book of the business as much as I can.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance!
Corinne
