Rigid fork advice sought

Hello all.

I have a Saracen Terratrax frame, which I'd like to get back in use. However, it has no forks. It is either a 1998 or 1997 I believe. it has a 150mm head tube. It looks as if the Terratrax originally came with an A-style fork, but I don't mind if what goes on is that, or threaded. So, I either need to obtain some forks, or, on the other hand, as it happens, I have a set of forks, from another bike, different brand, but they are for a 26 inch wheel, and are threaded. But they are just too long on the steerer tube, in that, the threaded part starts too high up, i.e. above the top of the Saracen's head tube, by about 8mm or so. Perhaps, I could cut the thread to run a bit further down those forks ? I think it would be a "die" that I would need for that ? (and knowledge of the thread size of course). My other idea was, to put a spacer, at the bottom of the steerer tube, below its lower race (if that's possible - I haven't looked too carefully - that was just one of those ideas that you have in the bath etc).

So, if anyone has good advice, it would be welcome.

Thanks

Rusty.

Are you saying the thread is to high with the fork already fitted through the lower headset race?
A photo would be handy.

You can't shim at the bottom - the crown race fit is n stepped out, and if needs to be super solid.

If you need a few mm more threads, a local shop should have the die - it's definitely not worth buying one, £100s 🤯
Cheaper to buy a fork the right size👍

Hello Bikeworkshop.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, the thread is too high, with the steerer tube inserted fully from the bottom.

I will try and provide a picture.

Thank you for your advice.

Best regards

Rusty.

Head tube length + headset stack height=steerer length.
Alloy headsets and some specific models have a much greater stack height than steel headsets.
