Road Racing Pictures •

Thanks for the info Rob. I hadn't realised he passed away so early.

Here's a few more. I think they're all from the West Yorkshire championship race mid/late 70's, held north of Leeds. I'm sure with a little bit of digging I can get the actual year.

70sRoadRace.2.jpg

The bunch chasing. These will probably all be 1st category riders. Can't put a name to any - but I know a man who can!

70sRoadRace.4.jpg

A couple chasing the break - or they could be the break, can't remember! Charly Burton (Beryl's husband) on the right with the bell. Must be start of last lap

70sRoadRace.3BerylBurton.jpg

Beryl Burton chasing with a clubmate on her wheel. This must have been an early uni-sex event? Charly shouting encouragement. I've still got my Morley CC jersey like those from my time with the club in '77. Let's just say It's a bit 'snug' now...................................

70sRoadRace.1.jpg

The winning break at the finish. Keith McArthur from Harrogate winning the sprint. Second place I can't remember. (But I know a man etc.) Keith was a young rising star and later rode the Milk Race. No idea who the distant third is. He might even have been lapped!

70sRoadRace.5.jpg

Sprint for the minor placings. I wonder if the young lad spectating ever grew up to be a cyclist?

Might still be a few more..................................

Used to do a fair number of circuit / Kermesse racing around East Park in Hull BITD.

There was an awkward corner just before the finishing straight, that coupled with the usual switching /trying to change gear usually meant there were regular crashes so was a popular spot for spectators!!!

There are a few more. Bit of a jumbled lot, mostly mid/late 60's.

PaulOultonPark66.A.jpg

A very wet evening at Oulton Park circuit in 1966. I'm the sensible one wearing a cap. This race was run the same way round as the cars but the next week we went the other way round as this made the finishing straight a lot longer.

This was the finish of the North Wales Division championships near Wrexham 1965. The winner is Tony Whitehead Deeside Olympic. Second place was Ian Parry who lived locally but rode for Rhos-on-Sea CC. He had trained very hard for the event but Tony just pipped him for the win. Ian was so disappointed that he retired from the sport. Several of my Wrexham RC clubmates in the picture and also, with his hands aloft, a very young Graham Weigh. My clubmates are looking for me but they had to wait a little while..........................

This and the following were taken at the Reading Track League Handicap RR in 1968, somewhere to the west of Reading. My camera - but I was riding so not responsible for the content! Leading is a HWCC clubmate Graham Lacy and 3rd is someone that became a lot more well known in the 90's and noughties in the MTB arena. It is a junior category Patrick Adams who used to organise the Mountain Mayhem 24 hour events.

Here we have Steve Snowling on the left riding for South Bucks RC and Steve Wilson of High Wycombe. Steve Snowling went on to become a succesful team mechanic on the continent.

And the finish. The guy on the right winning was (I think) from the Bon Amis club from Reading. Second, in the middle fighting for air is yours truly again. Another 100 yards I'd of 'ad 'im.................................... :) There were 3 groups, Juniors, 3rd category and 1st and 2nd category with a minute or so time interval between. I was in the 2nd group and we caught the juniors quite quickly and managed to stay away to the finish. However, it was a very close thing as just after we passed the line a group of 1st cats came thundering past!

I may not have finished yet..................................

What a great set of pictures, carry on mate. I think you'll get fed up before we do :)

Not quite fed up yet (but getting there - slowly)

Just a few more as you asked nicely:)

EllesmereRR65.1.A.jpg

Ellesmere Fred Roberts Memorial 100 mile RR 1965. I was the commissaire (they'd have anybody in those days!) in the following car. The only rider I can remember now is No.17 Brian Pearson Merseyside Whs.

EllesmereRR65.2.A.jpg

The finish - but can't remember any names except that 2nd place was a guy from Chesterfield Coureurs. Love the bonedome crash helmet! And the motor cycle cop in his (slightly) more modern version.

HetVolk93.6.A.jpg

Het Volk 1993 at the bottom of 'The Mur'. No idea who the riders are but it was a small break who ultimately got caught.

HetVolk93.7.A.jpg

Swinging round to get the bunch grinding up 'The Mur'. It was a cold day!

HetVolk93.4.A.jpg

Same event on the 'Oude Kwaremont'. I managed to have a chat with Alan Peiper who was spectating, really nice guy. Later we gave a lift to the finish to Thiery Marie and he gave me his Bidon which I still have.

Getting to the dregs now - unless I do a bit of scanning.
