i have drops on my commuter and i only ever use them when going downhill. the rest of the time i use the hoods. No other reason than I prefer it, don't think there's anything wrong with that!

maybe he should've had the earphones in his ears rather than his eyes then he may have seen the car in front of him. Sorry he had an accident but if you don't look where you are going then whatever you are driving/riding you are going to hit something! I have ridden with and without earphones...

I'm sure I read somewhere that bottom brackets on modern bikes are further from the ground than on older bikes - wouldn't this have an effect on the suitable frame size?
