1997 GT RTS All Terra Mountain Bike Advice on Bearings and Handlebars/Accessories Due to Hand Pain

Great, let's do that then. Thanks! Is it possible to add a chain guard? Should a bottom bearing free spin or stop turning as soon as you remove your hand? Wanting to check if it's fine or needs replacing. Likewise, should I be changing the rear or will this combination work well?

I've done as you suggested. Stripped and cleaned. The chain has had a good go at the rear pivot arm but seems structurally sound. Looks like are a lot of bearings/bushings to replace, are they all the same? 608LU BB-UN71 73mm shell 28, 38, 48

I'm struggling wit terminology, which is why you think I am asking to be spoon fed. Is this right? Crank standard: “HT2” = Shimano Hollowtech II Chainring fitment: 4-bolt, 104 mm BCD 24 mm spindle, external BB cups What's needed: A replacement chainring that’s 4-bolt, 104 mm BCD A...

Thanks for your reply. I was really trying to avoid changing to to double crank but I think it's inevitable. ht2 and has a ring BCD of 104. Any recommendations?

That makes sense, so I need replacement parts. Isn't there anything new available that is up to the right standard? You said the one I linked wasn't very good but triples are hard to find?

Yep, that's what I was told too! That's why I am here. Surely there have to be some new components suitable for this bike rather than fitting used gear that's probably not got much life left in it? So I have made some more clips in case it helps. If set in gear 2 front and gear 8 back, should...

1997 GT RTS All Terra Mountain Bike Advice on Bearings and Handlebars/Accessories Due to Hand Pain

I didn't know it was an awful replacement set. I'm happy to spend money on good components to get this working properly, I just need to know what I should be ordering. I have no problem changing the rear cassette and chainset once I know what I should be ordering. I have chain tools, how do I...

Okay, so I need to order a new chainset. How's this? https://www.tweekscycles.com/shimano-tourney-fca073-7-8-speed-chainset-triple-796287/#review-tab What about a new chain whilst at it? Any recommendations? Finally, are the jockey wheels a likely problem? What pivots? Side to side waggle...

Once I understand what's going on and can get the right parts, I'll strip it down and clean. Brake cleaner presumably good for this?

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, tried a new chain. I wasn't sure quite what you meant, so I have a clip and photos to share in the hope this is what was needed. The rear cassette looks good to me, the chainset looks bad and I don't know about the rest?

Okay, thanks for the suggestion. Looks straight to me? I don't know if there's a lot of slack in the chain though? Clip:

3 x 8 Gear 2 front and 4 at the rear. Okay, I will do that later. Thanks.

1997 GT RTS All Terra Mountain Bike Advice on Bearings and Handlebars/Accessories Due to Hand Pain

Thinking back, I replaced the chainset before due to this problem, so it's most likely to be an issue with alignment primarily, followed by wear? I replaced the chainset and the cassette thinking that would sort it out, it's still the same number of gears as was originally on the bike when I got...

Anyone? Also, going back to the original post, what's the most likely cause of chain skipping? I am happy to replace any necessary parts. I'm thinking of looking at a new Shimano Tourney FCA073 7/8-Speed Chainset - Triple, 8-Speed Cassette, a decent new chain of the right length, strong frame...
