How to tell if a bike frame is 'good' or not.

Guys Thanks - I'm certainly learning the subtleties and the fact that there is perhaps a certain element of 'attraction' to the bike, one which isn't present in many of todays bikes. ps Robbie love the bikes on your Flickr

Ah sorry I meant at the end of the steel era so that would be mid 80s onwards, I'm really enjoying learning about the older bikes but I must confess to feeling a bit lost!

Thanks for the link - interesting reading. I'm I right in thinking that the quality of a steel frame is down to the small details rather than with modern frames where it is very much technology led? What would be a good example of a high end advanced steel frame?

I took a sander to the rust on the downtube and thankfully it appears to be surface only, in fact there is little rust on the frame as a whole. The below pic is the 'clip-in' thing I mentioned, ideas if I should ditch or source a new one appreciated!

The frame is in for shot blasting next week so it will be interesting to see what is revealed, hopefully the rust won't be too bad. As I said this is very much a learning curve, hopefully an enjoyable and not too expensive one!

Hi all. As a little project to keep me occupied I decided to search for a suitable 'do-er upper', I wasn't especially bothered about the bike being the of especially great quality, rather something I could learn on without spending a great deal of cash. Scouring eBay, Gumtree etc. turned up...
