For a cheap chain guide, I just use a front mech locked off using the high and low stops, I use a road one (looks neater) and have removed all the bits not needed (like return spring, washers - so its bolted solid, lever arm etc) and that works just fine - better retro 'look' than a modern...

I have a top pull STX RC, 34.9 going spare, however it has no bolts in it, so you'd need a clamp bolt, cable clamp bolt (I think I still have the washer bit) and the bolt that holds the cage together....... Simon
