Same rear mech, three cage lengths by 1992, only one model though. As above the chainset (and hence BB also), front mech, freehub and cassette were different.

Well, to give them the benefit of the doubt: A) if you really did just take the front mech off a working HardRock and then fit new tyres, saddle and cables you'd probably be under-selling it at £70, and B) it clearly states they have fitted "new cables, a new shifter, a new chain and a new front...

15 years in the bike industry, I have worked with TWO good mechanics who were also comfortable working the shop floor.

Cost-saving, anyone can do a PDI, most bikes can be easily built from a box with little experience or mechanical knowledge. Some years ago I worked for Cycle Surgery (actually, this refers to my second stint with an Indy inbewteen), I managed a large, high turnover shop just off Oxford Street...
