I see what you mean! I normally frequent the road section of this forum where quite a lot of modern stuff gets advertised alongside real retro. I thought the same would apply to MTBs as well - in fact I recently bought a newish (On-one) Frame and fork on here so the pre 1997 bit didn't occur to...

There is no external control other than air pressure. Damping adjustments are made by changing internal valves. This is not a messy job as there is no oil bath inside the forks! The instructions give advice on settings etc.
