I seem to remember reading about these in the 90s. I believe they are some kind of ABS system like on cars. I don't know how it works, or if it works. I guess they weren't a success. Never seen these anywhere.
Not 100% sure but it looks like an early nineties Shimano Alivio. Heavy and nothing special in their range, but a solid piece of kit that should work faultless for years.
But you Alan is worthy of something better looking :D

Hi, I used the same shifters on an old bike for years. It was a cheap replacement to get the bike going again after my grip shifters wore out. They were bomb proof, never missed a beat. Just make sure the rear derailleur has good spring tension and that the cables run smooth.

These sold well in the Netherlands. Some of the sponsored guys in my cycling club got a deal on these at the time. Believe they were handling well and and not noodly at all. Comfortable on longer rides, though I think thats more because of geometry than material.
