I managed to bag a few parts. eBay was able to supply a correct front and rear mech. M550 shimano LX 3x7 as it should be. The front mech being a bottom pull fitting a 31.8 down tube.
Sourced a set of cranks, again M550 LX components. The rings may not be correct but they could be moved on to...
After a few rides I neglected to notice that the bottom bracket had worked loose, causing a unsavoury crunching from the area. I stripped the bottom bracket off and found that the bearing cage had warn and was allowing the bearing to move around. As we were planning on going for a ride the next...
I have given it some thought. I have the bottom bracket out and can see into the seatpost tube. I am guessing that the worst of the corrosion would be in these areas, thankfully it isn’t a steel frame so won’t rot like that. The areas I can see into seem sound.
The RH calliper mount is further forward than the left, or is it the other way around... looks like the bottom of the RH fork is in a correct ish position, but it’s difficult to tell.
I need to get the forks in the headset and on the frame and measure the wheelbase. It’s supposed to be 41.94...
Thanks for the tips. I learned a lot from getting the quill stem out of my old Merlin mtb a few weeks ago.
It took some effort to actually get the quill bolt to move in the first place! I placed a drift on the underside of the quill (wheel end) and gave it a few persuasive wallops. I was able...
Thanks for the clarification/confusion.
I decided that the suspense was getting too much and I simply had to know what year this frame was and what components were on it. I am not sure what ‘super low profile’ is, and I can’t see it in the 1991 catalogue.
I found the frame number and...
Stover Park extension of Route 28
At the Heathfield end of Route 28 there is a lake with a cycle path around it, Stover Park.
My daughter and I drove out to the park last week and took her new bike out for its first spin. The Park is relatively flat, all off road and I’d suggest not for...
Thanks for the info on the brakes and the stem, I have this frame stored at my bodyshop at the moment. I need to check the frame number and see how to dissect what it all means, then I'll know for sure that its a '91.
Am I right in assuming (according to the archive section), that 1991 had M550...
To be fair, if I didn’t have access to the 3d printer I would have done something very similar.
The satisfying thing about polishing this turd is that anything I do is going to be an improvement. I rode it to work the other day and the weight is an issue for me (pushing 16kg), let alone...
Thanks for the feedback.
If you can find a picture to share Mark, I’d appreciate it. I expect I shall end up refinishing the frame and forks in the same as it is now. But part of me really wants to put my own stamp on it as the paint is so far gone at this stage. Polished would be nice but...
Re: Cannondale M700 ditch find
Well as it goes, I was thinking that myself after this evenings dosing with the power washer!
See this Hope decal? Suspect I thought.
Removed part of it.
Digging further into the bike, it seems that the '94/5 components came from another bike. Specialized...
A friend of mine owns a piece of land for their horses and I was helping out with some repairs on a barn, when I found a half buried mtb in a ditch. Literally buried and waterlogged (being a ditch). One thing led to another and I ended up being gifted this frame, which had a pair of ridged...
:) That’s fair advice guys, I had seen that Rockhopper and thought about it. It also justifies getting a nice vintage commuter mtb for me. (Keep looking for an old Cinder Kone in orange)
Maybe I’ll just keep the spanner and strip, clean and rebuild these hubs for now.
