yup its a write off fo sizzle
I'm thinking wall art now too.
The frame is an official write off - have tried bonding (no funny business!) and no success.
It was a terrific ride - and has stood up to years of abuse. 20 years old isn't a bad lifespan for early carbon. And Trek were really...
I've broken my Trek 8900 (1992 - the purple one!) the carbon bonding has come unstuck for the bottom bracket housing on the frame as per previous posts. I've had a really good deal from Trek for a new bike - so have used up the lifetime guarantee; but i don't know what to do with the old frame...
fixing the frame
The bit that has lost the bonding in lay-mans terms is the tube that the seat post goes into at the bottom where there is an ally hosing for the bottom bracket. Basically the bit of the bike that is under the most tension when pedalling. I think the problems i've got with...
Trek carbon 8900 frame failure UPDATE
Well the frame is a write off  But Trek made me an offer on a new bike that was too good to miss - this is despite the fact that i'm not the first owner and have no receipt. Lifetime guarantees are brilliant!
PS - i'm selling the PACE threaded forks...
UPDATE - Bad news
So i glued and clamped up the frame, left it a week for the resin to bond. And it didn't work. Not for long anyway. Close to giving up, which is sad.
Trek's warranty appears to depend on finding the receipt, which i don't have; think it was new in '91 - so that's out i...
Update - on the frame
I got through to Darren from Carbon Bike Repairs - nice guy and helpful.
He sent me some araldite - frame is now in my attic clamped up whilst the glue dries.
Wasn't sure how strong araldite is, but time will tell.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions, i'll update once...
Thanks for the ideas
Thanks for that chaps!
I've been leaving messages with CBR - haven't heard back yet. Try again next week see what he recommends.
I'll let you know how i get on.
Hi!
My trusty Trek has thrown a wobbler; not too cross with it because it is nearly 20 years old now.
The carbon tubing on the frame has come unstuck from the alu BB housing :( . There must be a way to get hold of the glue used to bond carbon to alu some-how; does anyone know what they...
Me Carbon has come unstuck from the alu bottom bracket housing. I reckon it's fixable with the right type of glue; does anyone have any ideas?
It's a circa '91, '92 composite frame. Don't have much cash to spend on it right now, but i hate seeing it like this! :(
