I'll agree on that one - the earlier OCLV hardtails and aluminium frames had additional aluminium chainsuck protection plates bonded on. The Y bikes didn't for some reason - but careful spacing on the chainset and front mech helps - I suffered much less with Hollowtech II BB's and chainsets.

I was just about to say the same thing - its no worse than running a multi pivot frame which needs more maintenance and bolt watching. Single Pivot = simplicity and stiffness and lighter weight. Just not *trusting* something is different to actually having ridden one for a decent length of...

Nico Voulliez. Still bloody quick today, and competes in the Megavalanche (like me) frequently, winning it last year. I shared lunch a table over from him in France last year :spoddygeekalert:

Re: Trek Trek found that the bonding let go rather than the carbon cracking. The bonding was designed to be weaker than the carbon to prevent such things, and as such the shock mount was bonded and then riveted in to preserve strength and longevity. I had my 96 shock mount rebonded by...

Already a member on that user group and have a little interest from one of the keener members! I don't know what others did to their Y frames, but I never broke a Y bike without having done something stupid. I wouldn't be suprised if those who had broke theirs did something that wasn't...

BTW I've owned a few now, and I used to sell them in the bike shop I used to work in years ago (Yeovil Cycle Centre). I always wanted another, and finally found this one. As such, being a bit of a nerd on things like this, you could say I'm probably one of the most knowledgable Y geeks out...

They were and still are - being a simple URT system they didn't have weird tendancy's and the only thing I suppose is an issue is the suspension locks up a little upon rear braking. Climbing wise, especially if you use a PUSH'd rear Fox, they climb without much bob, and they are as stiff as...

1996 Trek Y22 frameset, bare carbon, with spare small front.

This is the mad thing, and I guess where trends play the prices - a Kona or Klien is no better a bike, and certainly no better well made. Trek still support these frames, offering parts for them, still offer the lifetime warranty on them (I had the bonded shock mount reriveted by them last...
