In the old days we used to lock our bikes up - now when we go on club runs not one of us uses a bike lock - although to be fair I now live in New Zealand where bike thefts are much less common but still that is 30 or so bikes at probably an average of $8000 each sat outside the coffee shop...

Good point about brake squeal - i generally stand out on the club runs with my noisy brakes and if you watch the old tours de france etc you can hear the noise of the brakes when the riders come down the descents - not something you hear anymore..
Maybe grit or something abrasive in the pad material kicked up from the road - assuming there is still pad material present.. if they are original campag ones they probably need replacing - with something more up to date..i think over time the pad goes hard and is less affective - and from...
Either way works - a nice cap on the end of the brake cable is a much nicer finish if you are a perfectionist and also gives more chance of the cable being re-used in future - personally i go the other route and just cut it off and hide it under the front cover...also on the brake pads there are...

I had some veloflex clinchers on my team raleigh - they looked and rode great but as i use it a lot they didn't last long - they also had latex innertubes fitted by the previous owner which i am sure made the ride much more...well something but could definatly feel a difference..
