1996 GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace - Had to save it!

Just chiming in on the tyres; they're slow on the tarmac, but that's to be expected, right? I averaged 23km/hr on today's ride and I was pushing it as hard as usual on my road bikes where I'm usually averaging 30km/hr. I think the Billy Bonkers were faster, but these are on all for the light tan...

Haha yup! I've always wanted to install one upside down. I suffer from OCD, so never was able to, and always spent the time to line up the logos perfectly, but I'm trying my best to throw out my own rules on this build and just have as much fun with it as possible. Mid Life Crisis I reckon! 😅

Flite 1990 from Blue Lug. Dinner Plate. King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime. Humptulips (gotta be the best name for a tyre, ever!). Have a Nice Ride. More bling bits in the mail! Next step is to try and service the fork myself (left stanchion is shot and not holding air), get a...

Jen's amazing custom painted rim brake SL6 Tarmac. Riding the GT through the city at night to Jen's place was insanely fun, ripping home was even more rad! Good company, good tunes. Good night! Jen's helmet. Caught up for drinks with Sydney cyclist and MAAP Ambassador Jen Kay the other...

Oh man! Long time! Cheers, life's great now that I'm back on bikes and YES that photo! I literally brought it up to post it on the Weight Weenies Discord a few weeks ago haha!

Cheers guys, lots more trial and error to come as I'm having way too much fun. Lots of purple bits came in the mail today from ImprovePart who make improved retro MTB parts no longer available new. I always dreamed of owning Ringle stuff, could never afford it. I found some bits on eBay but...

1996 GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace - Had to save it!

I hunted down some Rock Shox Mag 21’s. They look damn clean, but as expected they don’t work too well. Definitely more plush than what I had on there originally, but they don’t bounce back to where they should (they need air? Probably a lot more than just air). I swapped out to a shorter stem...

Cheers guys! Just having way too much fun. I dug up a couple more old photos (I knew I had them somewhere!), turns out the bike I rode to school was a GT Talera. No triple triangle? Lame! Looks to be more of a hybrid bike than a MTB. Funny that my saddle was pushed forwards and pointed down...

1996 GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace - Had to save it!

I was on the vodka during the build the other day, and soon after taking the last photo late in the afternoon I decided I couldn't wait for my AliExpress brake levers to arrive so I raided the Extralite brake levers off my fixie. By the time I was done it was night so I strapped on some lights...

New Old Stock! I went down to the storage cage in my unit and dug through plastic containers in search for bits and this is all the stuff I found. Pretty hilarious that I’ve been holding on to this stuff for 15+ years! The fat Maxxis 2.3 High Roller front and fast rolling 2.1 Kenda Small...

1996 GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace - Had to save it!

Stripping the bike down was SO fun and worth the price of admission alone. Cleaning up the frame was not so fun, but it's as good as it's going to get, for now. Forks work, kind of? They're going to be useless for anything but the big hits. I ripped the drivetrain off my Kona Jake the...

NOS Scott AT-4 PRO bars. So tempting to use them for this bike, but thinking I might save them as there's just something special about having them unused. That's me on the left in 1990 with a GT... Outpost? It was a low end bike, and I dreamed of owning an Avalanche back then (yes you read...

What a mess. Thank G the BB came out. Big ding in the top tube and also the downtube. Adds character... right?!

1996 GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace - Had to save it!

I spotted this GT Avalanche on FB Marketplace listed as a 1992, but I'm pretty sure it's a 1996? I've finally gotten quite comfortable with being in lycra, but getting back out on the trails was always inevitable. A small taste of gravel on my newly acquired Kona Jake the Snake cyclocross bike...

    show us your gt's

This bike is so fun in an urban environment, but on the trails? Not so much. Some of the technical bits had rocky steps and I was bouncing around so much my feet almost came off the pedals more than a few times. I could get a dropper post, fatter tyres, run lower pressures and SPD’s too, but...
