It's not really a hidden click, it's just there. 7 and 8 speed systems use the same cassette spacing, so the existing 7 indexing positions will work, and you'll find there is one extra position available when you use an 8 speed cassette.

8 speed works fine on friction with XT and DX thumbies. I've heard that some people get them to work ok with indexing too as there is an extra "click" available, but I never managed to get it right myself. 9 speed on friction didn't seem to work well tho.

I've been using the same pair of XT thumbies on my main MTB since c. 94. They've done 1000's of miles of year round riding and really do just keep going. I just run them on friction so never have to worry about cables stretching, indexing etc. The downside is that you occasionally mis shift...

Has anyone please got one of those top tube mounted cable stops which I could use to convert a still-in-use 1991 Cindercone from cantis to V's? Or I think there was a design which fits to the top of the seat tube which would be equally good. Thanx!
