I now have an ETC silver headset - just what I wanted. Its the correct dimensions - but a very tight fit, looking at it. I'm a bit worried that I may not be able to replace the lower bearing in future though because its a caged needle roller device. The upper seems to be regular caged balls.

There is an offer at Tredz on 1" ECT headsets and these would appear to be JIS if 22.2/30/27 means what I think it means - and they are very reasonably priced - the better one having a water seal.

I bought a repair stand for about £30. It has a large plastic clamp, folding legs (4) and the clamp can be extended horizontally so the cranks miss the upright. handy for getting the gear cable tension right. It probably isn't as good as a professional stand costing several hundred £, but...
Cycle paths; I remember before all cars had laminated screens numpty drivers were in the habit of knocking out the glass of broken screens on the nearest cycle track. Then car drivers would all honk when you diverted onto the road to avoid punctures. In those days I found that truck and bus...
I've seen very mixed reviews for Taya chains but maybe they are OK for a bike which doesn't get a lot of use? I just paid 87p for a Taya 5-8 spd chain and £2.24 for a 9 spd chain at Wilko. I figured that at those prices they were worth trying. I also bought a Slime inner tube, to see if they...
