Shimano 1050 rd? Shimano 1055 rd?

Yes, but the trick is that you need to use the low (granny gear) and middle clicks, not the middle and high. If you use the lower two clicks, the cable tension and stop on the derailleur will make the third, high, click on the shifter unreachable, as if not there. if you use the higher clicks...

Shimano 1050 rd? Shimano 1055 rd?

I think that 1055 was 7 speed and 1056 was 8. But knowing Shimano, the 1055 could probably easily shift 8. There were differences in the cranks too between 1055 and 1056, too

Shimano 1050 rd? Shimano 1055 rd?

Between 1050 and 1055: Aesthetically, everything... technically, i am not so sure. There was a 1051 in between which combined the past and future somewhat awkwardly, in my opinion. Again aesthetics. 105 did go from 6 to 7 speeds in that time, but i think that was more of a shifter change than...

    Spotted on the street

I've seen similar NDS bracing on another French frame, I think. Can someone tell me why that's there? I mean obviously for disc brakes, right? ;) I do see a cam of some sort from the hub to the NDS chainstay, but that isn't for a coaster brake on this bike...

Taking a Haircut on a Vintage Bike

From a buyers perspective, i would be happy to see prices adjust down, i just haven't seen that happen in a widespread way yet.

Taking a Haircut on a Vintage Bike

I've seen that too. There may be a slump in the market, but I don't know if I have actually seen that reflected recently in reduced prices. There seems to be a lot of stuff just not selling, bikes that I am watching that just sit there for months. but not a real corresponding reduction in...

    Spotted on the street

Just saw this getting take out at the local and best (if i may say) Kashmiri restaurant in town; its a Cube, obviously from branding and also absolutely not a cube from appearance, but further i have no idea what it is. but a German brand with 90s or so graphics, aero tubes, full DA, and...

    Old Equipment on Modern Frame?

Oh the demise of the FD, it is surely another sign of the End.

    Old Equipment on Modern Frame?

I strongly prefer late 80s early 90s 7 and 8-speed stuff and find there are lots of advantages. It works great when tuned, and still works when not maintained or dirty. And it still works today. But this stuff i just consider as "out-of-step." They are essentially modern parts but without as...

    Old Equipment on Modern Frame?

Ok, i will elaborate having thought a bit more. I think that by the late 1980s, components had been pretty much figured out. Everything worked really well by then. And offered flexibility, in terms of mixing brands and eg a friction setting on index shifters. After that point, things just...

    High standards? 137mm bcd ...

The globalization represented in bikes is really astonishing, and since decades on decades. It speaks to the power of real standards over proprietary non-standards. The standardized value (27.2, 22.2, 25.4, 26 da da da) itself is ultimately arbitrary. That we ended up with this rather than that...
