I just stumbled upon this thread. I'm the proud owner of a Maxam Warpdrive that I bought used in 2002. I read above that they were first made in Taiwan. Mine has a "Built in USA" sticker. I recently had the whole drive train replaced. It's pretty sweet commuter bike now.
