Rigid or suspension forks - off-road touring

Plenty of bike shops here in the south. Agreed on shocks, you won't regret it. I wouldn't bring the bike to be honest, it won't take you long to find a good old bike here, with a 1 1/8ich head set. Then you can fit any shock you like. Don't scrimp on the tent, get a really good one (ie one...

dia tech heat set installed in a messy workspace

All sorted for now (will find another spacer), I will just leave the head tube open for now, might plug the base, then I can fill it with sherbet.

dia tech heat set installed in a messy workspace

Thanks guys, you are right about needing spacers, however there is no star nut with this system. That lock ring has a tapered flange that crimps the headset down. The star nut was a plastic fake, which I assume I can replace with a real one at some stage. The spacers will allow the stem to act...

dia tech heat set installed in a messy workspace

Looking at the spacer, I realise it is a threaded fork spacer that has been filed down to fit threadless. I am sure it did come off this diatech set when I removed it from the bike it was on before, however I doubt it was meant to be there. Will just leave it out for now.

dia tech heat set installed in a messy workspace

Just put some shox on my bike. The head set is a dia tech. Got it all together and it seems fine but there was a spacer left over, I think. Does this spacer come from this head set? Or could it have come from a cluttered messy work bench? If it is part of the head set (I think it is), I...

    seatpost size KHS ALITE 2500

Hi, I have a KHS ALITE 2500. Needs a bit of work but has some great parts, first bike I have owned with xt anything, the seat post was bent. I managed to remove it. I have measured it with an adjustable spanner and ruler. It looks to be about 28mm, can any one confirm the accuracy of my...

    Do Aluminium frames age well?

To further muddy the waters, 7005 also can be heat treated, it is on higher end frames. Also most bikes will be stolen before the frame fails anyway.

On my other bike (like I really only have 2 honest :D ), avanti barracuda, the cable comes in from the other side of the frame, the cable routing is a messy big loop for the v's, no good picture at hand but you can see the routing here... I will switch these 2 bike brakes over at some stage.

No, just well used. I have a rockshox jett t2 that I will try on this bike sometime, I am too cheap to buy a new head set and stem so it might be a while.

The apex seems to have very good cable routing for v-brakes, I might try that on mine. My first quality bike was an early 1990's ascent ex, wish I still had it.

scrubbed up Here is an update on the bike... loads of excess of the weight was hiding in the chunky rear cluster and an extremely thick rear tube. I made up the u brake guide with a plastic cable guide clamp and a couple of cable ties. Brush painted, gloss white. If anyone ever reads...
