Right! Watching that YouTube video, I can see that some engineer really earned his pay designing all the parts that make up the shifter. It seems better quality than the seemingly cheap/plastic modern day Deore shifter with its two under bar levers on my Trek Roscoe 7.

Thank you all so much. Now I'm really glad I asked instead of just cracking the housing open! I'm amazed at how smoothly and flawlessly the SIS shifter and Deore derailleur functions... after all these years!

Forgot to ask... also, what is the wheel size specification (width)? Can a tire narrower than the stock 1.95" tire (more of a gravel tire width, perhaps 1.5"?) be run on these rims? I'm just thinking about possibly using this for sort of a hybrid-style riding? Mix of paved, gravel, and easy...
