    Work bikes

Thanks! I don't think I'll be wearing a cape anytime soon, though. ;-)

Mountain bikes on slicks thread ??

Re: My commuter bike, a '97 Kona Kilauea. I use Schwalbe Spicers if I can get them at a good price (the reflex strip is cool at night) but these Michelin Wild Run'rs are pretty damn fast.

    Work bikes

Re: My latest work ride. Only put this together within the last few months but already a favourite, and fast! '97 Kona Kilauea and eclectic mix of parts. My colleagues describe it as old and decrepit, but then again they could have been talking about me...

    Kona Lava Dome 1997 14"

    Kona Kilauea 17", wrong year?

The dropouts make it a '97 surely? Also looks a bit small for a 17" but I could be wrong there. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kona-Kilauea- ... 3f4b511f26

    Kona Cinder Cone 1995 18"

£42 for a pair of P2s seems reasonable but even they could be dented. Throw the rest away.

    Kona Cinder Cone 1997 18/19"

Yes it is a 19", which is fine with me. I have no problems with 18" or 19" Kona hardtails. Another original owner bike, and it is completely stock apart from bar ends (ditched straight away), grips and tyres. A few rubs on the paint but no chips or dings and no chainsuck marks. Chain is about...

    Kona Cinder Cone 1997 18/19"

My thoughts exactly, I'll let you know once I've picked it up on Saturday. That'll be 6 in the stable right now, the third '97, and Kona number 10 since '94. Hi, my name is Dave and I'm a Konaholic.

    Wheel building guide

Agreed, I'm always wary of older bikes with rim brakes. How much wear has the rim had? Wheels can be expensive but if the hub and spokes are good then fitting a new rim is a far cheaper option and really quite easy.

    Wheel building guide

Wow, that's quite a canyon you have there! I know bicycle wheels are extremely strong, due to the way they're made, but what are the chances of this type of crack causing a sudden catastrophic failure, rather than slowly spreading and getting worse, as here? I threw away an old Mavic...

    Judy springs in Pace forks?

It's these beasties. Purchased at the end of 1994 or early 1995, can't remember. What I find interesting is the badge on each leg. I haven't seen that in other photos but a friend of mine, who bought the titanium version at the same time, has the same badges. I'll drop Tim a line.

    Judy springs in Pace forks?

I don't get it. I just bought some Kronos Judy SL springs and popped them in my RC35s. They get stuck where the slider narrows, there's no way the cap will reach the bottom of the slider to fit the circlip. I tried removing the anodized plate so I was using the bare spring but it still wouldn't...

    '94 LX Cantis

1994 Shimano LX Cantis from a Trek 930. Belong to a friend and I can vouch for the good condition and lack of use that these brakes have seen. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-Shimano- ... 2c73953bcb

Mixed bizness - Kona Cinder Cone 1996 - RIP

Sorry to hear about the CC. My original '94 CC also broke the chainstay at the drive-side dropout sometime in '97. Luckily Second Level Sport (Kona dealers at the time) replaced the frame free, but only had a '97 Kilauea left in stock (result!!!). I was using a '95 CC (ebay-ed from its...
