Hi again! Time for my Trek 9700!

Thanks everyone. I took it out today to our mountain biking park, and after a few adjustments (brake reach and saddle height) I was able to put in some really good laps. Definitely faster than my FS Jamis, as evident from my Garmin Edge 305 (which I keep in my camelback). My average went...

Hi again! Time for my Trek 9700!

Just got it put back together tonight! The original Alivio crank and square taper bb are gone (the bb seized) in favor of a new SLX crank. Everything else is pretty much the same, sans the fork (the original Rock Shock Indy SL got pretty sticky), which I replaced with an 04 Manitou Black...

Project No. 6: Alpinestars Cro-Mega SS

Wow, it looks amazing, even with those craaazy handlebars! I've started tearing mine down to use the parts to build up my Trek 9700. I'm going to see about sleeving the head tube of my Al-Mega down to 1-1/8 to 1) reinforce it, and 2) dump the silly adapter once and for all. But for now, I'm...

    You guys jinxed me!

Wow. Pretty atrocious website, but really nice work. I think I'm going to spend some more time looking for a place that will do a really good job. Pity I don't live in au!

    You guys jinxed me!

Wow, good info from everyone. I especially like the idea about the motorcycle shop! I phoned a place that I found online that does frame repairs. The lady said that they'd weld it, then grind the inside and leave the outside. When I mentioned my idea to fit a sleeve of some kind around the...

    You guys jinxed me!

I hope! I'm thinking the best way would be to weld it, then grind off as little from the inside as is needed to clear the steerer tube (since it's 1-1/8" inside a 1-1/4" steerer). Then maybe on the outside, try to find a tube whose i.d. is the same as the head tube's o.d. and slide it over...

    You guys jinxed me!

I posted pics of my 92 Alpinestars Al-Mega a few weeks back, and after reading posts by other Al-Mega owners, I counted myself lucky that I hadn't had any of the problems with cracking that others have had. Well, last week I decided to load her up for a trip to our local mountain biking area...

Wow! I remember these! In fact, it was one of the bikes I always wanted to own. It's gorgeous!

    My 1992 Alpinestars Al-Mega

Did some clean-up work today. Also pulled the big ring off the front for use on my wife's bike, and threw a bash guard on. Pulled some links out of the chain too. It rides really nice. My 01 Dakar Expert, which may soon be the topic of a new thread on the 97 and up forum ;)

    My 1992 Alpinestars Al-Mega

Oh I'm well aware of the links in your sig. You're why I decided to join up! 8) I honestly think I'm going to stick with the fixed front ring. I've got a 3rd eye chain watcher on it to keep it from dropping down to the small, and I think in time I'll pull the big ring off in favor of a...

    My 1992 Alpinestars Al-Mega

Thanks! I thought about a clamp-on FD, but due to how the seat tube is, figured it would sit too far forward to work properly. I wish I could figure out how to get the E-type working, but having the fixed front middle ring is fine really. The front fork doesn't look too out of place...

    My 1992 Alpinestars Al-Mega

I replied in one of the other Alpinestars threads, but was encouraged to start my own. I started road riding back in the late 1980s, when I was in my 20's. As time wore on, I acquired better and better bikes. Sometime in the mid-90s, I got a job at a local Performance Bike shop, first doing...

Project No. 6: Alpinestars Cro-Mega SS

Hello all, first post on the forums. First off, THANK YOU for posting all the great AlpineStars eyecandy on here. It's great to see some bikes still out there. I have a 1992 Al-Mega XT, purchased from my old riding buddy, Mike. It's a fantastic bike, and even though I now have two other...
