They should feel the same. Sounds like the little lever that engages "friction only" isn't fully engaging (or disengaging if you know what I mean). DoctorBike.

Your chain is too long by the look of it. You can probably take out 6 links. Best to check it by putting it into the biggest cogs at back and front and then removing all slack. Also, rear derailleur looks a bit sad - mebbe it's lost some springiness in the cage return. Could be worn cogs...
