More urgently I need to do the following:
1. Rear mech hanger needs straightening as it’s a little out of whack
2. Rear wheel needs realignment as it’s too far over causing the tire to catch the frame; only a couple of mm out so no drama
Other than the above and the front wheel rebuild, new...
Quick update; fresh tyres on and went with the all black Panaracer Smoke/Dart combo. Original kona Maximum/Reaction tyres kept for any show and shine I may take it too.
Yeah I love the 1992; my brother had that exact one. I had a soft spot for the 200gs thumbies, but as this one has the original rapidfire that still (remarkably) work I will stick with them. Lovely old bikes the early Kona’s.
Replacement rear mech on. I know it’s way better than this bike would ever have had, but I did it for two very good reasons:
1. Deore DX is the coolest looking mtb groupset ever.
2. School bikeshed rules; upgrading your rear mech enhanced the cool factor of your bike by 1000%
Minor tinkering on a long Friday work lunch. HG90 cassette here and installed; unfortunately missing its red sticker but that makes no difference to me. And it looks smashing on the restored exage hub with its shiny new like for like qr 😀
replacement foam ritchey grips are here (also courtesy of my garage…), and awaiting an HG90 cassette from a postman. Lots of fettling to do and shifters to rebuild, but she will be a beauty, and may make an appearance at Malverns Classic next year
Bits sorted so far: rear wheel re-spoked, replacement 400lx front mech sourced from a box in my garage. Alloy kona bars liberated from a later model Lava Dome. Replacement Tange headset also found in my garage…..
